The Cancun Independant Media Centre

Paid a visit to the Centro de Medios Independientes in downtown Cancun where I got re-acquainted with how powerful this whole blog thing is.

Indymedia has been empowering people to tell their own stories for years now. A worldwide publishing network, independant media centres have become an important source of independant reporting on issues around the globe.

imc_cancun.jpgThe Centro de Medios Independientes is housed in a slightly run-down hall on a quiet back street. The building is humming with activity: people from all over holding planning meetings, updating web pages, learning about radio transmitting and hearing presentations from local and international activists.

I met with Evan and we gave an informal workshop on "Weblogging: how to publish to the web without the fuss". It wasn't terribly well attended (we were competing with a workshop on building a radio transmitter) but was educational nonetheless.

The session reminded me how powerful the weblog phenomenon is, because it lowers the technical knowledge required to publish to the web, and it hooks activists into a large community of bloggers around the globe.

Hey - I read this story on the Indymedia site.

"3 activists chased by police, convergence center under steady surveillance. Advisory to travel in groups.

At one in the afternoon an unknown person entered the welcoming space of the convergence tower and began asking questions about the independent media convergence. He wanted to know who was organizing the IMC, and insisted several times that we take him to meet the organizers of this movement. We asked him why he needed this information and he told us that he was just interested in knowing more. He said he wanted to know what were the criteria for participation, with the justification that he came with a group of young people from the US to help build puppets, and they wanted to also work with the IMC."
