Thanks for the cheese!

We now have 40 people onboard the Esperanza, 40 people who will have breakfast, lunch and dinner onboard for quite a long time - that means we need a lot of food! Thanks to Rien, an old friend who happens to live on Waiheke island, most of the storage was already waiting on the quayside when we arrived. It took us many hours to get it all onboard. I spent most of that time down in the dark dungeons where we store it all, standing underneath a hatch where a dolly filled with all sorts of food was craned down. We emptied it as fast as we could, shouted "YEP!" and the empty dolly was pulled up again.

Chains of crewmembers were formed in the alleyways, boxes going from hands to hands. We were in good spirit, our bodies having soaked up vitamins from all the delicious fresh veggies and fruit we got for lunch (I have never been so happy to see an avocado!)

Our jokes went sillier by the hour. Mir and Serkan had the idea to start sending little gifts up on the empty dolly, for our mates on the quayside, where they were sweating away filling the cage. The gifts got more and more elaborate; we made a little doll from a couple of potatoes that fell out of a sack, and a pumpkin was decorated with ear protection and a face.

Cheese box
A few hours of hoisting and carrying later I started to suspect that we'd be stuck down there in the storage rooms forever and ever! Then the cheese arrived. Mir handed me the first box, and I was just about to pass it on to the next person in line when I saw that something was scribbled on the box: "save the whales", and little peace signs. "Look, this is cheese with a message!" Thank you girls or boys who packed the cheese - we will do our very best.

It took the cooks a long time to sort everything out in the fridge and freezer, Simona complains that her nose is still deep frozen.

We were all looking forward to a couple of days on dry land, but now we are eager to continue southwards. Due to a technical malfunction we have to stay put a little longer, but we will soon be on our way again.
