Anchorage Police and the Blue Whale
Posted by Dave (in Anchorage, Alaska)
Well, the International Whaling Commission has come and gone - and life in Anchorage seems to be getting back to normal. It's a bit weird to be passing by the Captain Cook hotel, and not see any police surrounding it. The area where the Whales Broadcasting Corporation tent and inflatable was situated is just an empty street now.
The whale, however, has gone to a good home. Throughout our week here, the Anchorage Police Department were tremendously friendly - dropping by to chat at the tent all of the time, and posing for photos with us. In fact, just when we were worried about how they would handle the Big Blue March on Sunday 27th - which was allowed by permit - some policemen showed up and tried on the blue whale suits!

At the end of the IWC meeting last week, what seemed like the entire police force of Anchorage posed for a photography with Ashby and Melanie - and the big blue whale named "Flo". Afterwards, the police agreed to give her a new home, and led her off (we promise she hasn't been jailed... blue whales *are* protected, after all).
