Posted by Dave (in New York)

Well here it is folks - what with Japan buying votes from the likes of landlocked Laos, things were looking edgy - but the anti-whaling countries have rallied, and are now in the majority!

I didn't realise so many countries were pro whaling, they should be ashamed of themselves. It's just a thought, the whalers who commit these crimes why can't the anti whaling countries have naval vessels patrolling and if they see whaling going on blow them and their boat out the water. That could prove a deterrent.

Hi Colin - it's a tricky situation - the whaling is often happening in, e.g. territorial waters of the countries hunting - like Iceland or Norway, or in International waters, like in the case of the Japanese whaling fleet's hunts in Antarctic. Policing that is a hot political issue...

A large number of the "pro whaling" nations are forced into the IWC by Japan and Norway which use thier overseas aid programs as leverage , they even provide flights and accomodation for delegates who will vote for them .
