-- crew biography --
Nationality - Australian Hometown - Sydney, NSW I have been committed to social and environmental change for many years. After a short career as a musician, and some training as a bush lawyer, I got involved in working for reform in the criminal justice system, and am now fully engaged in working for Greenpeace. I started working for Greenpeace in early 2000 as the nuclear campaigner in the Australia Pacific office. Since that time I have become the team leader of the forests campaign, which has a major commitment to saving the Paradise Forests of Asia Pacific. We work primarily in Papua New Guinea and also in the Solomon Islands What is your favorite forest? The extraordinary highland forests on the Island of New Guinea. Why is this campaign tour especially important to you? It is incredibly important to me that we can show the world the extraordinary destruction that is happening in the Asia Pacific region. Of all the forest regions in the world (and this is the third largest rainforest in the world), this has the largest amount of illegal logging, and the most rapidly expanding regional demand for timber. Much of the forest destruction in the area is driven by demand in China, Japan, Europe and Australia. What do you love or hate about working on a Greenpeace ship? I love the fact that you can really make things happen with a Greenpeace ship, and the fact that Greenpeace ships are crewed by such committed and fascinating people. I miss my daughter being away from home for long periods of time. Have you ever been to this part of the world before? I have worked in Asia before and also in many parts of the Pacific. What do you do when you're not working for Greenpeace? Rest! Why is non-violent / peaceful action important? Because it is the simple expression of the change that we are trying to create. What is your favorite protest you've done with Greenpeace or another non-profit group. Stopping the Bush/Howard war machine in Sydney harbour in 2003. We blockaded the departure of an Australian frigate on its way to the illegal Iraq war. Another personal favourite was occupying the Lucas Heights reactor in Sydney on the day the government was giving evidence of how wonderfully secure it was. Anything else you want to say? Lots of thanks to the excellent team working on this campaign, and to all the GP offices, volunteers and supporters around the world. Thanks for all your hard work! |
