-- crew biography --
While at school (in my much younger days) we would hear how the forests of the world were in trouble while learning about the fantastic wildlife that relies on it still standing. Many, many old trees have been removed, torn from the earth since then. These days, my perspectives have been broadened both on my understanding of the forests of the world and the biodiversity (a big word I picked up along the way) of life that is found within. Over the last seven years sailing with Greenpeace from Pole to Pole (eat your heart out Michael Palin) and all of the places in between (too many to mention) I have witnessed first hand the plight of the worlds forests. Getting to see the most beautiful places in the world at the same time absorbing in depth the true situation from the people who live there, the government organisations involved, tree and wildlife biologists, loggers themselves and the reality from the environmental organisations that immerse themselves in the work. These environmental organisations are NOT "scare mongering" The real situation is dire and heartbreaking. The worlds forests and the wildlife that's lives in it are relying on the governments of the world and the public to stop buying ancient forests, and for the loggers to stop logging it NOW. A group of scientists claimed that if we continued logging at 1990's levels then we would lose half of our big animal species due to habitat loss by the middle of this century. We are logging the world's forests at a rate faster than 1990 levels...............for what? To make nice furniture, bench tops, flooring, blinds, plywood and paper. There are some great initiatives being slowly implemented by the world's governments, I only hope that it will be in time. For we are taking away our own future, ours and our children's. |
