What got me involved in the forests issue? When I was in nature club at my university I saw many amazing, very beautiful, forests. But I was only seeing one side of the forest issue.

I really became involved only after seeing the other side of forest utilization. Specifically, seeing what is happening in Riau, where the illegal logging business happens right in front of your eyes, and is very destructive to the forest. Compare this to another forest nearby, one that is well managed by the local community, and you easily understand that forests can be managed properly or destructively. Seeing this made me realize that we must stand up for the forests - not just saving the trees, but the whole ecosystem, which benefits people now and, if well managed, also future generations.

Whoa, big dream, but worth fighting for, in my opinion. This dream brought me, with friends in Telapak, to run a campaign on stopping destructive logging. Strategically, we choose to focus on the message, "stop illegal logging", and work with friends from all over Indonesia. We also get support from other organizations abroad that share the same vision. Together we put pressures on, and offer suggestions to, our own government, our neighboring countries, and consumer countries.

I believe there is still a chance for the forest, as long as someone will still fight for it. If you have a measuring scale, with piles of rice on either side - even one grain of rice can unbalance the scale. This is true also for people working to save the forests. Even one person can tip the scale in favor of the forests. So let's hand in hand together, work on it, fight for the forests, fight for us, in a non-violent way, in a peaceful way.
