-- update --

Departure Jakarta, departure Indonesia

I only want to say "terima kasih!" to everyone who helped out during the tour. There was a huge amount of work done by people back on land to make everything come together. This includes the hoards of volunteers, and all our friends from local environmental organizations. I also want to say thanks to everyone who came down to the ship while we were in Jakarta. It was great meeting all of you - so many people dedicated, in small and very big ways, to saving the last ancient forests.

Also, a big thanks to all you all out there in webland for caring enough about the issue to follow it on this website. This page won't be updated until the next piece of Rainbow Warrior work on the Paradise Forests of Asia Pacific. Now we're off for some ship maintenance. But, you can keep up on what's happening with the ancient forests, and with the Rainbow Warrior, via the Greenpeace International home page.

Kids' day on the ship

Busses and busses full of school kids arrived this morning. Fortunately, the crew and local volunteers were ready for them. Each group of kids first got a talk about the forests of Indonesia, and then came on board the Rainbow Warrior for some activities planned by Mare.

Once on board, one group goes up to the main deck for a talk about boats and boat safety; one goes to the bridge; and one goes to the stern where Phil teaches them how to tie a clove hitch and they rig a, "Stop Forest Crime" banner on the ship's railing. Then they all go to the next station.

Well, at times it was more chaos then plan, but thanks to the local volunteers and some hard working crew all went smoothly. It was good seeing all the curiosity and enthusiasm (especially from the kids). Some of today's visitors are even going to get their schools to start buying recycled (post-consumer) paper. Go kids!

Navigation

OK, one more slideshow. I suppose I should point out that even though it's about navigation, and called, "There and back again with Pete", Oscar (as second mate) is actually the ship's navigator.

There and back again with Pete (Flash slideshow - 421K).
