The world's beaches are in trouble!

Shipbreaking takes place in poor countries, where once pretty beaches in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Turkey are turned into ship graveyards. However, old ships contain hazardous substances such as asbestos, lead paint and PCBs, which are released into the environment. The Rainbow Warrior is in India to visit the shipbreaking yards. Evedien from the Netherlands is on board....

Dutch ship found at shipbreaking yard Alang

Toxic Patrol.jpgDuring a toxic patrol Greenpeace found pieces of what used to be the Dutch ship 'Project Orient'. Pieces of metal and waste of the ship were lying around the scrap yard. According to the port authorities there was no inventory of hazardous materials on board. Before scraping the ship hadn't been cleaned, so all toxic chemicals were still on board arriving in Alang.

Greenpeace immediately wrote a letter to the Dutch Minister of Environment (VROM) to ask for clarification. How could this have happened? It's totally opposite the Dutch policy. Greenpeace wants the ship owner to take back the toxic chemicals from the ship. Also the Dutch government should strengthen their policy regarding 'end-of-live' vessels.

The ship 'Project Orient' was build in 1981 and was owned by the Dutch company Sakhalin Heavy Transport Group 'Project Femco' C.V. in Rotterdam. The home port of the ship was Willemstad in the Dutch Antilles. The company Workship Contractors B.V. from Rotterdam managed the ship. The ship sailed under the Dutch flag.

Hallo Evedien,

Groente,

Hans
