emails of support

I thought maybe that the rally, the four corners TV report and Mark
Latham's visit might curb Gunn's greed. When will it stop? I am
visiting in summer 2005 - what will be left? I am sorry that you had
to witness this destruction - it must be heart breaking.

Donna Watt

I’m a member from Greenpeace Austria. "ACT" is the Austrian Newspaper from Greenpeace. There is a news story about the Styx-Valley. It`s great to do this work.

Much luck, Felicity, most heart warming.

Best regards,
Romed

To all of you there in the Styx ... thank you for being there! Your
tenacity and courage are inspirational. I visit this page quite
frequently and read your calendar updates. Unfortunately the destructive fires you viewed from the ground were not the only ones burning in Tasmania that night ... this Aqua satellite image (courtesy of MODIS Rapid Response Project at NASA/GSFC) captured on 22.3.2004 reveals quite extensive burning in Tasmania on that day:
http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/realtime/single.cgi?A040820435
Such ecological and economic vandalism is difficult to comprehend
but as it is now possible to view AQUA and TERRA satellite images of all the earth acquired every day of the year, such activities cannot remain as covert as they have been in the past (if anyone is watching). Wishing you all the very best, and a happy outcome for the Styx.

Mary Haginikitas

Hey guys and girls,

Just got back to Sydney after my little jaunt around Tassie and thought I'd send a note of good luck to all involved at the GRS.

I'm busily telling everyone who will listen (and a few that don't )
about the great job the GRS is doing and the woeful destruction of the forests down there. It's funny, as I thought that Tassie was clean and green and leading the environmental movement in this country, and I found that not only is that not true, but with the massive amount of drowned valleys under dams, the massive sheep farms, mining (Queenstown is totally poisoned, how can anyone live there?) and the widespread use of the "this is a working forest " signage, the state looked to me like it was in a very bad way.
If 40% of the land is protected, does that mean they can completely destroy the rest of it? It sure looks like it from my quick trip around.
Anyway, I will be sending letters of support to TWS and Greenpeace
and letters of concern to the pollies and the companies involved.
By the way, it was great to see the Growling Swallot, that place should be World Heritage listed. How did the photo's turn out of the napalm burn that we witnessed while there? The smoke was drifting across about a hundred kilometres to the east as I drove out and up to Derwent Bridge.
Pathetic way to use the resources of "working forest", they should be
ashamed.
Hope everyone enjoyed the strawberries and honey. Keep up the good work everyone, you've inspired me and hopefully many more.

Shayne Dryden

Hi All,

Liz and I have just returned from a holiday in Tassie. I had never been there before and can't get over how beautiful Tassie is. We tried to come out to give you some support and see the area for ourselves but the little Lancer we hired nearly broke in two on the Styx road so we had to return after just a few kms.

Next time we are down in Tassie we will hire a better car or 4wd but hopefully by then a ban will be in place on wood chipping ancient forests. We have emailed Mark Latham on this issue in a bid to change political party views and have joined the Wilderness Society .
Its great to know people like you have the ability and passion to try to
save our forests. Again keep up the great work and we will try to make more people aware of the fight to save the forest.

Best Wishes
Gary and Elizabeth Mynes

Hello, tree huggers! I think what you are doing is a very noble thing, and if more people had the balls/ovaries and the brains, it would be far more
common. Anyhoo, good luck!

Sincerely, a former tree hugger herself, Cole.

Hey there gals and guys...

I admire everything you are all doing. I will say one thing, by the end of this year I AM coming to see you and stand at the bottom of the tree and say hello and thank you before I go overseas for a while. See you then. Please stay warm and don't get a cold... :) Cheers

Tanya in Brisbane Queensland

Dear activists

I just got to know about your defence work and I visited your webpage. I want to thank all you for the efforts you are doing, especially your diary is very touching. Though I know that words almost cannot tell the beauty of nature I´m very grateful of your wonderful descriptions. I tell all my friends and colleagues about your work so that more people from all around the world get to know of Styx Valley and your giant friend Gandalf.

I hope that I support you in this way. I will stay in "touch" with your webpage. I wish you good luck.

Ingrid, a friend from Vienna

Big high to all you kids down there in Tas doing the tree-thang! I tell lots of people about it as well as the whole issue thing and we up here in Adelaide are gettin a good response! Here's something for your morale to chew:

13th March 2004: Adelaide Mob Drop Banner from the City Railway Station Reading "Tassies Forests: a National Responsibility".....plenty of media followed...No arrests!

And something for yo imagination:

5 June , WED, massTREEtheatre.... where hundreds of Adelaideans will come and form a huge 84m tree on a main street in Adelaide city....folks will wear brown, green, and black for humus and together creating a forest scape in the city!!

Anyway keep up the top effort....love to all

Adelaide Forest Mob

Wow, all you people defending the forest are amazing.
I am truly inspired by your love of the planet. Your
actions have convinced me that I will dedicate my life
to the environment and the continued protection of it.
I am currently 15 but if I were 10 years older I would
do (almost) anything to be in that tree with you. How
did you all become a part of the tree sit, how did you
find out about it? I want to make sure I'm part of
other amazing protests such as this in the future.

Thank you for helping to save the planet

Dear Styx forest defenders,

Thankyou for everything – but most of all the giving of yourselves for the forests and wildlife. Today, may not save the forests, but the rescue gates have at last been opened. Your long vigil high in Gandalf’s Staff has bound us all together and will always be seen as, like the moon,
helping turn the tide. Have a celebratory time.

Warmest wishes
Bob Brown

Hi, I just wanted to say that I was looking at your website for a school
project and thought that your projects and campaigns looked really
cool. You guys are so lucky to be able to live in a tree! No fair : )
Hope that your tree stays around for a long time! Keep up the good
work.

a friend
p.s. I would love to be a Greenpeace activist when I'm older!

Hi everyone there in the Styx Valley,

My husband and I visited you the week before last during a holiday in Tasmania. We really feel it was one of the most special experiences for us. Obviously I don't need to tell you how it felt to be in that very special area with those magnificent trees and ferns, and the special energy there.

We feel blessed that we were able to be there and we hope with all our hearts that we won't be one of the last!

This was our first direct experience with Greenpeace in action and we were so impressed by what you were doing there. You are doing such wonderful work, and we do hope you will be successful. We are talking to everyone about the GRS and will write to John Howard etc. We hope in this very small way we can contribute to your efforts.

With our best wishes

Hi there tree people,
What an awesome job you are doing! I have just checked out the website and seen the pics. You are helping to preserve the wilderness for our kids and generations to come. You probably don't get a whole lot of thanks, but here is a big one. I just wrote to the Japanese, the PM and Gunns. Keep it up and lets hope and pray the pollies or the industrialists see sense!

Thank you for participating in a way I wish I could. Your work is valued, even from the 45th floor of a corporate tower in the middle of New York City.

It’s really great, what you are doing!!
All good wishes!

DONT STOP!!!
YOUR MESSAGE - OF RESISTENT AGAINST THE DESTRUCION OF NATURE - ARRIVED EVEN MY COUNTRY - AUSTRIA!!!
WE ARE WITH YOU!!!
Fam. Untersteggaber / Vienna

I have just read an article in an Austrian newspaper about your peaceful way to try and protect the old, huge and great eucalyptus trees in Tasmania, in the Styx Valley. Last year I traveled around Tasmania and I thought, "What a beautiful island". I am shocked to read that loggers plan to cut down these respectful trees.
Angela, Austria

Hey mates! I just wanted to say how proud I am of you. In the face of greed, corruption and political power you sit defiant, and anyone with a brain and a heart that speaks louder than dollars knows that you are right in what you do.
Kate

I just want to say that me and my daughter are so very grateful for what you guys are doing for us. thank you!! again, thank you treesavers for being such heroes!!! love from pernille and lilly, Perth
Just a quick G'day and Onya to all of you wonderful people up there, downthere, in the Styx Valley in Tassie. Want to tell you that I think you're doing an absolutely FANTASTIC thing for every Australian, and our children will thank you.
Marc, Melbourne

Dear Skye tree-sitters,
Congratulations on your most breathtaking, impressive and spectacular tree-sit!!!
Ingmar, Vancouver

Thank you so much for putting your time into helping save our forests. Without people like yourselves, young people would not have much of a future.
Take care of yourselves down there!
Vicki (Australia)

I was a (small) customer at Bomaco, but I just wrote them a mail that I will stop buying at their place because of the Tasmanian Oak problem. Keep on doing your good job !!!!
Ben, Belgium

All the best in your fight to save this small piece of our natural environment. It is more than just a small piece of Earth's puzzle but awareness of a desperate situation that we are heading toward. We must be optimistic in our hopes that the human race is smart enough to realize the tragedies in store before it is too late. In the mean time, enjoy the view and cross your fingers.
Curtis from Canada

I'm from Tasmania but unfortunately I live in Saudi Arabia, but I'm coming back next year, and I hope to help when I get there. You're all very brave, remember that all the rain is worth it.
Lindsay, Saudi Arabia

Dear friends high up in the Threes of Styx Valley!
We hope you will succeed.
My wife und I wish you the very best and good luck!
Günter und Ingrid, Ansbach/Germany

You guys sitting in that tree reminds me of that Simpson's episode where Lisa does the same. Keep up the good work, the world appreciates it.

John, Murfreesboro, Tennessee

I really look forward to logging on and catching up with the lastest news from the Global Rescue Station. The tree looks amazing and what you are doing really makes sense of the

more spiritual meaning of Xmas( Peace on Earth) than the massive consumer madness that has become Xmas.
Donna and Greta, Beechworth, Victoria

Hello from Albuquerque, New Mexico! Thank you, thank you, thank you for your commitment to the preservation of our HOME, this amazing earth.Your voices are being heard and your efforts are not in vain.
Amber

You are doing work I can only wish to be doing, please continue your efforts and hold true to your convictions. You are facing a mighty foe, but with support through e-mail's like this one, you have a substantial "eco-army" backing you up. Please know that many of us appreciate your valiant efforts and want to commend you on your dedication to help saving our planet. Thank you very much for all that you do. Don't ever think that what you doing isn't impacting the lives of thousands'.

I admire you all so much and believe in everything your doing! thankyou
 Anna M

When I have seen your photo's from the forest, it is amazing beautiful. And to think to destroy  this is also amazing. Please stay up there and let everbody know that this forest is not for sale. I wish you all the luck en succes with this protest.
René E from Holland.
To all concerned.....those up in the trees and to all behind the scenes that put this website together to keep us informed.....thank you!  We are with you in spirit and applaud your efforts and sacrifices.  Such an insane world when we have to go to these extremes to save our forest habitats.
Bren

I feel bad by thinking of you living on a tree while I'm sitting comfortably infront of my computer writing you this message.
I admire your courage and I wan't to send you a huge hug full of strength and love, wisshing you a happy New Year and hoping that the dreams of 2003 become the reality of 2004.
Alda C - Portugal

Hallo to all tree-sitters in the Styx Valley/AUS. You are doing a great job! I´ll try to get in contact with the tree-buyers in Japan.
Good luck to you all and best wishes for 2004!
Reimund W, Gifhorn,Germany

Good on you. Keep up the good work. I could never get up there so I really admire you your good work.
Michelle, Perth

Aloha! I greatly admire what you folks are doing! May God Bless your efforts, may you be safe and healthy! Aloha from Hawaii, Kailani

Thank you for caring!  You've inspired me!  Thanks!

Having just today ,while browsing through the Sydney Morning herald, came across an article about your endeavors to stop the logging in. I like possibly millions of others must be walking around blindfolded while carrying on with my every day life without a knowledge of what is happening to my world. Having recently seen on TV the atrocity of the mudslides In Indonesia I cannot believe that the same is happening in our own backyards, when will we learn?
Sally

happy christmas and I hope you see santa and his reindeer from that great height !
Nicole

G’day all working for our children’s future. I was reading about you and looking at your pictures. It fills me with joy to see the youth of today with such high moral standards. You are all excellent.
Sometimes I despair at the youth of today, but when I see what you are trying to achieve, I know the world has a bright future.
Dave G

We had a bit of a storm in Sydney recently and I thought, gee I hope the Styx Valley guys are staying in the tree. We also had a fair bit of rain, and I thought, gee I hope those guys are staying dry! Now I realize that you would have enjoyed that deluge.
Mary M

Love your work. You guys could go down in history as the ones who saved the world’s tallest hardwood trees – WOW - not to mention the many threatened species of the Styx.
Em

I’m just writing to support you during your time in the trees in Tasmania. I have been horrified at the continued logging of this beautiful forest, namely the centuries-old hardwood trees which are part of our natural Australian heritage. I applaud your courageous decision- thank you for being brave enough to take a stand.
Rosie

Me thinks some people are finally barking up the right tree!! Good to see! Can’t tell you how happy I am to see this kinda action! To all up the tree and also all those behind the scenes .. since so many people are working for this.... congratulations and may the force be with you and the Styx. I am following your treesit all the way here in France today.
Helena

Yeah, not really that much to say. Just keep up the good work and keep being heard, for all of us.
Ian

I was crying as I listened on my way up to Jindabyne - I have emailed the pollies on behalf of the Styx trees and told at least 10 other people about your treehouse. Bravo I humbly salute you and send peace and love.
Julie.

I've just been emailed your story from a friend of mine who is passionately involved in conserving the Styx and Tarkine forests, and I am absolutely inspired by your efforts and guts to swing from a tree that tall. It's a creative, daring statement and I love it!
Sharon C

Thank you for your commitment and dedication .Good luck
Karen

Please keep at it guys, you are doing a brilliant job doing what so many of us wish that we had the time and courage to do.
Maurice

To you who stand for us - BRAVO. The noblest activity I believe anyone can undertake - the prevention of the destruction. What you do - I salute you.
Sally H

It amazes me what you can do with today's technology! I had no idea you could be up a tree with phones and laptops! That is so cool! You've reached Montana! God bless you all!
Sincerely,
Marty.

Keep it up, you lot! We're proud of you and are thinking of you. My son (aged 7) thinks you're brilliant!
Thank goodness there are people like you in this insane world.
Kisses from Italy,
Vicky K

What they do to the forest seems to be malicious in the extreme! It's beyond comprehension. As Gandhi said, “What do I think of Western Civilisation? It would be a good idea."
All the best
Russell K

Well done for putting your beliefs into action. Here in Ireland, it's the wrong time of year for outdoor living - almost winter. As it is mid-spring for you, daytime could well be hot, even 65 metres up. From the photos I have seen, it doesn't look like there is much shelter at treetop level. Could be scary, swaying in the wind.
Keep up the good work.
Celine M and family

I am crying right now.
I'm so proud.
All of you make me proud!
Never give up the fight!!!
We are with you all in spirit and mind.
Sherry P, Ca. U.S.A.

Come on, you've got all that time sitting around in that beautiful canopy, and you keep mentioning how beautiful the views are, so how about uploading some good photos to show the rest of us?
Alan

I just wanted to send you a message saying that my prayers are with you and I hope that you are all doing well.
Leonore (Leo)

Respect to you - I hope you are successful. I spent some time tree sitting a few years ago, trying to stop the building of a road in the Aire Valley at Bingley in Yorkshire. You really get a different perspective on the world don't you - and I don't just mean because you are high up. But being among leaves and insects, with the sounds of the breeze and wildlife is really something else.
Gael

You're doing a fantastic thing, but you might have been aware of that yet. Good luck! Greetings from the Netherlands,
Marten M

It's good to hear that spirits remain high in the Styx Valley. Hang in there (literally) and keep up the struggle.
Your friends in action,
Lynda and Damian

My name is Rafael, I write from Mexico to support you guys I know that the mission is very hard and dangerous because, please take care my heart, my thoughts and my good vibe are with you guys. Your friend from Mexico,
Rafael Eslava

Greetings from Lapland
I just wanted to tell you I think you are doing a great job. Lots of greetings from a beautiful winterish Lapland (-15 centigrades now) where I just came back from a kick-sledge ride on the thick (30 cm) and plain ice just before the daylight disappears again (2 o clock pm).
Michael L

Good on you.
Your actions may help save the trees and all the forest animals.
You guys are all brilliant. And I hope Sakyo helps get the message back to Japanese consumers to pressure the paper companies.
Stay warm and strong. Eat well. Keep laughing.
Keith

I cannot even begin to tell you how greatly I support you and love this idea! At my high school, we just started an environmentalist club, and seeing that you fine folks are there making such a difference really endorses our enthusiasm for helping out environment here in my town.
Mitchel K, Atlantic Canada

BRAVO!! You are really courageous & do a great job, I truly think of you from my comfortable home in France. One day, maybe, I'll join the activists. Be sure we support you & think of you!
Noelle

I just got excited at what you are doing, and wanted to express that to somebody.
I sat a couple of days in a (much younger and smaller) tree in Denmark as part of a protest against a freeway. - In the lonely hours, all alone, I experienced that you often need encouragement.
Therefore, of all my heart, I hope that people wake up and see what magnificent and fragile treasure that resides in nature.
Best hopes and greetings from Denmark.
Tarje B

I have just been reading my GP updates which in turn led me to you guys and your weblogs. I am far far away in Wales (though similarly surrounded by huge beautiful forest!) and so it is true - you are most certainly getting the message out there! You said the weather kind of dictates your days to a certain extent so I hope it is treating you well today.
x Jemima

Tree people.
I just wanted to email you guys and say thankyou for being in the Styx. My wife and I are grateful for your sacrifices. Please know that we support you 100% even if we are not up that tree with you. Stay happy and safe,
Andy and Lyne S

How excellent, the king of all tree-sits! You guys should be proud to be up there on behalf of all of us, and I'm proud that you're there
stopping the mindless destruction of an amazing place. Keep it up, I
appreciate it!
Leonie

Well done guys - news of your protest has now reached London and we are all following your progress on the web.
If it gets cold, cramped and miserable up there, just think of life in a
battery-hen style office cubicle in London on a grey and wet November day and I'm sure it will inspire you to continue on!!!
Go you good thing
Mike

Congratulations!!!!! and very best wishes.
How long do you plan to be up there?
Gordon C.

Warmest congratulations to you all for your great logistic
triumph, getting all that stuff up there without getting
sprung. The local TV coverage tonight (Wednesday) was really
positive (and extensive) as I'm sure you know already.

I'm Hector ("the Protector"), off to jail tomorrow 2pm for my
tree-sit at Mother Cummings in 1998. Annoying that we're still
fighting the same miserable mob who have no respect for the
great little planet which gave them birth. Still, as someone
once said, life isn't meant to be easy. We just have to keep
on trying.

Bet you're busy up there. Still at least you've got a decent
sized staff - I was by myself and hardly got time to make a
cup of tea between phone calls!

I saw a wedge-tailed eagle as soon as I got my platform
finished too. He or she circled around and around me quite low
as I lay stock still on my back gazing straight up. I took it
as a very good omen indeed.

Think of me in jail if any of you have a spare moment - maybe
even look at www.nfn.org.au/up-a-tree. Very out of date -
will fix it up when I get out, include all the legal
aftermath to make a little self-contained archive.

Hope you are still there when I'm free again, and can drop me
a rope, I'd love to jump up for a visit.

Keep up the good work,
Hector.

Hi and best luck to you all.
I was just wondering if there was anything we can do to help
to keep you all up there as long as possible.

I'm up on the east coast of Tas and am making tipis, and would
be able to make an all-weather canvas canopy, if that would
help. I can also gather up support for another 'support the
Styx day' walk.

I am also putting out a CD of photos to fund a protest
against the logging of South Sister above St Marys and would
love to do a similar project for the Styx.
Adam B.

Dear Activists

I'm a member of the Wilderness Society and simply wish to pass
on my thanks and support for the tremendous (and courageous)
work you are doing in bringing attention to the plight of the
Styx Valley.

Hopefully as a result of your efforts, my wife and I will in
future be able to visit the Styx Valley with our little son
(currently 10 weeks old) and enjoy the awesome sights of this
forest as it is today.

My family and I wish you all the best.

Regards
Clinton B.

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to send you a quick note to let you know there's a
real buzz of excitement and gratitude down here on the
streets. The frontliners yesterday were confronted with
congrats and happiness from the public re the tree sit. Many
supporters are coming up to us and thanking Greenpeace for
getting involved and also asking us to pass on their thanks to
you all. The public are very supportive generally and not
only convey great appreciation but also think it's fantastic
to see us all working together. Best of luck to you all. We
send our warmest thoughts to you and hope for a safe and
successfull venture. Will keep in touch and keep you updated.
May the dreams of us all come true.
Kim and the GP
Frontliners, Tas.

I have read in a number of places that these are the world's
tallest hardwood trees. Why is this significant to the
environment, apart from novelty value? Does it have anything
to do with the critical environmental indicators of soil,
water and biodiversity? I would have thought that there was
greatest threat to biodiversity in areas cleared for
agriculture where there are isolated pockets of remnant
bushland. Also, rising water tables threatening entire forests
in low rainfall areas due to salinity. Sure, big trees are
pretty and good for the soul, but are they really the most
important environmental issue to Australia?
Tim C.

Hi
It is wonderful that Greenpeace has the Styx forest on its
home page. I live in Tasmania and am always writing to
politicians, editors, woood chip companies from Japan and
wilderness societies around the world to help save our
forests. As another idea I was wondering if a global protest
by Greenpeace and other wilderness groups could gather outside
the Australian embassies in all the different countries on the
same day. I think it would create great publicirty for the
cause and send a loud and global message to our prime minister
and the Tasmanian state government that what they are doing is
wrong in the eyes of the world. Thankyou for the wonderful
work that Greenpeace does to protect the worlds wild places
and wildlife and thankyou so much for caring about Tasmania,
where I live and your brave members putting themselves so high
up in our magestic trees to get the massage to the world that
this forest should be a world heritage listed area. The
Tarkine is also in grave danger and it is one of only 5
pockets of cool temperate rainforests left in the world.
Thankyou again.

Yours sincerely
Victoria W.
Deloraine, Tasmania

Hey folks, I'm sitting here at my desk and just heard about your action on Triple J. Wishing you all the best, be tough, be strong, these kinds of actions can go really really well and generate lots of support and interest in the situation. And now the mum in me says be safe, double check your ropes and harnesses and don't forget to drink enough water! Sending lots of good energy.
Sarah

HATS OFF TO YA. Think you're doing a great job.
Vaughan

Sakyo, you crazy person! I thought you were in Australia for vacation.
Then I started to get suspicious when I found out that you were hanging out with Vincent (the mad-Dutchman). Now I find out you are 65 meters up in a tree!
Andrew

Congratulations!!!!
And I must say...that Yellow will springboard a new range of colour fashions this season...who chose it???
Racy.

Are you cold, are you scared and are you having fun?
YOU ARE ALL EXCELLENT PEOPLE
love
Yvette

Warmest congratulations to you all for your great logistic triumph, getting all that stuff up there without getting sprung.
Neil

Hi and best luck to you all. I was just wandering if there was anything we can do to help to keep you all up there as long as possible.
Adam

Well done you brave, brave and committed people. Well done and let's hope the powers that be get the message.
Carol

This is an amazing venture -- great website, terrific design. Hope you have heads and stomachs for heights. Best of luck

Good work gang and hang in there
Craig

We're up here in the tropics and sending down warm wishes and weather, but not the tropical downpour we got last night!! Good luck, hang in there and stay safe!
