Nostalgia

Ozgun cheking the weblog

From Omar
I'm sitting at the balcony of Ozgun's flat in Izmir, one of the many wonderful people I met during my stay in Turkey.
Izmir is worlds apart from Incirlik, but somehow I can't help but feel a surprising kind of nostalgia for our embassy their. I miss the people that kept it alive for a month.
We all needed some time off to recharge our batteries. In a few days I’ll leave Turkey and head back to work, but I’ll be checking often for comments and I’ll try to post some entries every now and then, maybe just anecdotes or stories about my stay in Incirlik. I’ll go through the piles of pictures and post some as well.
Thanks to all the people who “kept an eye” on our weblog.

The End ???

Mahir,Omar,Aslihan,Hilal

From Omar

Well, I figure this will be my last post for a while. We’ve just said goodbye to Berend, I’m leaving this afternoon and so will Aslihan. Paola, Stephanie, Jonathan and Philip left yesterday. I’ve arrived at the embassy only a few days after it opened; it’s been almost a month now, during which I’ve met all the activists that joined the embassy. Wonderful people, different in many ways, but all driven by the same desire; uncovering what the US military has deliberately kept hidden about nukes in Incirlik, and spreading a message of peace and hope for a better future for all.

I’m feeling this knot in my stomach. Despite all the hardships that we all lived through, it pains me to have to leave the embassy. I’ve greeted many activists, said goodbye to many, but I know that by this time tomorrow, this lively embassy will stand silent. When I think about it, I have to say that in many ways, our mission was a successful one. From the early days when people refused to even talk to us, to the later ones, greeted and welcomed in the village. We’ve achieved a lot, a lot more remains to be done, eventhough I feel that our presence as foreign activists could have been put to better use.

Thanks to all the people who’ve embarked on this journey. I’m grateful I had the chance to meet all those people, though I know I will be keep a special memory for two of them. Mahir, a man with tremendous insight on life and a big heart, and Aslihan, a capable woman with a sweet spirit. I know she had a lot to deal with, but that never stopped her from looking after all of us. Thank you all.

Birlikte İskenderun’a MV Ulla mitingine gittik.

Bugün Barış elçiliğinin her köşesinde emeğimin olduğunu bilmek beni gururlandırıyor.

The salt lake

By Stephanie
During our trip in the minibus from Incirlik to Ankara, we made several stops; one was at the salt lake “Tuz Golu”. It is very large yet at the same time extremely shallow. As we ran towards it, we noticed that the salt was very soft. Strangely enough when we stepped into the water we were in for a big surprise as the salt in the water became very hard and sharp and stuck into our feet. From there it was “ow-ow-ow’s”, there was not a single sound or living creature to spot. The sun was setting at that moment and very beautiful colours appeared in the sky. We were all in a good mood and started half to dance. We felt recharged to continue the trip to Ankara ;)

100% Nahit

by Paola
I’m leaving tomorrow morning. It won’t be easy to leave Incirlik, the Embassy, and the people I met here. It’s been a great experience, on many points of view.
There is one thing that really gave me something, and it’s talking to people in the streets of Adana, to inform them about the bombs, to have the postcards for the Prime Minister signed. I will always remember their smiles, their eyes when they were reading the message on the postcards, the questions they asked. I wish I can do this back to Italy with the people in Ghedi and Aviano, where the nuclear bombs are.
But it was possible, here, for a non turkish speaker like me, to have such a close contact to people, because of the turkish guys that helped us a lot: great Mahir, sweet Melda, smiling Hilal and expecially wonderful Nahit.
He was always there to help us, translating everything, giving us information and being so nice to everybody. I remember he was so excited when we were going to Ankara, his hometown, for the action. He is always ready to help, 100% sympathetic, 100% nice: 100% Nahit.

The only “truths”...

By Omar

Yesterday, all of us at the peace camp went out for a drink, unwinding after the action in Ankara.
A group of US soldiers on leave had been there for a while. A few exchanges and soon one of the soldiers, Dan, offered to buy a round of tequila shots.
Later on, he came along to visit our peace embassy and asked to add something to the log. Here’s what he had to say:

“As a soldier in the US Air Force, congregating with the International Green Peace Party is a relief. The only “truths” I see, are the “truths” that the US military sees. I met everybody at a bar, 10 June 2005. We spoke of the propaganda the military feeds us and the nuclear program that I was unaware of. Inspired, I decided to stay and talk throughout the night. They explained their purpose was not to protest, but rather to inform.”

If they only knew...

By Paola

There are lots of people in the street. We are in a busy area, in the centre of the Turkish capital, on Wednesday morning. There are elegant businessmen in their suit, middle aged women wearing veils on their heads, young mothers with their children.
At the bus stop, an occidental woman is sitting, apparently reading a book. Short red hair, light skin, coloured top and jeans, she looks like a tourist, just waiting for the bus to take her to a park, or to a mosque. When the activists pass in front of her, she glances briefly and comes back to her book.
Later, Philip and I will see this good-looking woman crossing the PM Office road, right in front of the police. Policemen will follow her with their eyes and she will pass by, looking in all directions. Two of the men in uniform will nod, maybe saying each other “ok, she’s just a tourist, she’s got nothing to do with these guys”. It’s funny how things never are what they seem... The blue eyes woman is in fact Nicky, our campaigner from Greenpeace International!!! :-)

We're keeping our eyes on you

Omar Wrote

Well, here we are at the embassy again. We’ve missed a few updates, but we were in Ankara, taking part in a greenpeace action in front of PM “Erdogan’s” office. “We're keeping our eyes on you” was meant to deliver a message to PM Erdogan, who was about to meet with President Bush, that we don’t want more nukes brought to turkey, we want the existing ones (90 Nukes) out of the Incirlik air base and that we are striving for a nuclear free Middle-east.
After a few scuffles and arrests, Ziya, Aslihan, Hilal and Berend were released and Aslihan immediately started talking to the media present at the site, heavily surrounded by police officers and secret service agents. Jonathan and I managed to sneak in behind Aslihan and open up the banner showing our message. Soon after Stephanie “The eye” joined in.

Stephanie Wrote

A few days ago we had an action (or demonstration, call it as you want) in Ankara. We started waking up early and making our walk to the park. There we had to wait a few minutes and after the signal was given, we took off. It didn’t take long though before the police dragged 3 of us. A few others were not allowed to enter the street leading to Erdogan’s office. I was a bit afraid for the people who were taken by the police because the police was running and it looked all quite dramatically. Luckily, they were released almost immediately and then Aslihan gave a press conference. There were a lot of cameras and flashes were lighting up everywhere. The people who couldn’t enter saw their chance to support Aslihan and opened the banner behind her. As you can see on the picture, we also wanted to use two ‘head-eyes’ to make our message clear. Unfortunately, we lost one eye (police kept it), but we still had one, which was undamaged, and we could still use that one. People passing by were wondering what was going on and a lot of them had never heard of the topic before. In general, we had amazingly press coverage and Berend was even on BBC-website!

Paola Wrote

It's 10.30 in the morning, when Philip and I get off the bus in front of the Prime Minister's office in Ankara. We have our t-shirts with the message, Remove the Nuclear Bombs, and huge eye-shaped balloons tied to smaller ones. We walk down the street towards the PM Office and start to cross the road, but we don't manage to get to the front gate: the police sees us and come across the road and order us to stop. We just stand there, holding our balloons with our message and hold our ground. We are here to ask the Prime Minister Erdogan who's in Washington to meet President Bush, to remove the nuclear weapons from Turkey. It's the same message we wish to deliver to all our governments, and the same situation all over Europe: Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Germany. That's why we are here: it's a global problem.
After few seconds, dozens of men come running from the Prime Minister's Office: at first, we don't understand who they are. But as soon as they arrive in front of us, they start taking pictures: they are photographers and operators from the media.
I stand there, and I think about our Embassy in Incirlik, I think about all the patient work that the guys have been doing during the last weeks, getting nearer and nearer to the people every day, explaining, listening, smiling, giving balloons to che children, and simply being there. Now, we are going to spread the message around turkey, Europe, and over the ocean, to Washington D.C.

Philip Wrote

As I was with Paola I wont repeat what happened so I will just give my thoughts on what I expected to happen, instant arrest, a possible 1-3 year prison sentence or deportation at the very least. After losing our interpreter to a momentary loss of nerve, understandable when your facing a sea of police running towards you. I was amazed to find that the Turkish Police acted with amazing restraint and we where only detained where we stood for a matter of minutes before finally being reunited with our other team members, who had been arrested and released. Message delivered without incident.

Aslihan Wrote

I was there standing in front of the prime minister’s office with Ziya and Hilal. There was nobody else to open the banner or come with the eyes. We were separated from the rest of the team. So I stood there for a while until the police realized whom we are. Well they did not notice us until we decided to start to give a statement. Then we have been dragged to the police bus where the only thing I could think of was whether the message came across. Sitting there in the car I was able to hear the police radio. They have been told that the group can do a press conference. I was restless again, I stood up to say, “Hey, you have to release me, I am supposed to give the press conference, you have to let me get out” So they let me out to give the conference.

Şimdi mesajımızı bütün Türkiye’ye, Avrupa’ya hatta okyanusun diğer yanına Washington’a yayacağız.

Doves can create very colorful rainbows

From Berend Boomsma

Today we had to say goodbye to Melda. She is a lovely volunteer with whom we had a lot of good fun and at the same time learned a lot from her.

Tonight we went to a cafe to relax and to play backgammon. A few of us did not know how to play this game, so as we sat down and started to play the game while others explained how we played. On the other side of the street where about twenty-five men sitting and having a chat together. They where the wise men from Incirlik. After five minutes a man came to us and asked us if we would like to come over and talk with them about the American nuclear bombs at the base in Incırlık.

This was actually the moment we were waiting for, so we went over and introduced ourselves. Their attitude was one of curiosity and they accepted us as their friends, which is a big improvement to the situation a few weeks ago. Nahit started to speak as he was giving a presentation. A few minutes after that Aslihan our campaigner and Mahir joined the group, so the conversation went on. They where very interested in what we had to tell and were not hostile at all, in fact it shows that the awareness of people here has started to rise. They were interested in the fact that we are an international group and wanted to know what our governments think about nuclear bombs. They also asked about the Americans and what they are going to do about it.
They question where very interesting and they appeared to show a lot of concern.

All I can say is that doves can create very colorful rainbows. I feel that we are slowly winning ground and that the people are starting to choose our side

And they’re in charge of the bomb!

From Omar and Philip

One evening while everyone from the peace embassy went to dine at Mujdat’s restaurant, a strange comedy started to play out, with the compliments of the owner and one his staff members.

They cleared a table and brought out a chopping board and large curved knife. The owner then placed a toothpick on the board and took a swipe at it and promptly cut it in half, to cheers and claps from the staff and patrons. He then invited an American soldier to have a go. “Come on! Come on, have a go!” he shouted. The American approached the table and was handed the knife and the owner placed a toothpick on the board, promptly, the American cut it in half. Everyone cheered and applauded. The owner said, “OK, let’s make it a little more interesting this time. Take your shoe and sock off and stand on one leg!” So he did. Another swing and the toothpick is cut in half and everyone clapped and cheered, “OK” said the restaurant owner “Now we’ll make it a little more difficult, stand on one leg….” And they blindfolded him. At which the owner bent down and promptly picked up the soldier’s sock and held it stretched out over the chopping board… CHOP, the sock was neatly sliced in half. The owner then quickly placed the sock back in the shoe. Everyone clapped and cheered. The soldier then went to put his shoe and sock back on; he started to pull the sock… which promptly slipped up his leg accompanied by the laughter of the whole restaurant. At which the American turned bright red after he realized that he was the brunt of the joke.

And these people are in charge of the bomb!

Blowing up...the balloons!!! / Bombalar patlayacağına balonlar patlasın!!!

From Stephanie

Yesterday, Mahir and me went to distribute balloons to the children on the street and in the elementary school of the village. They were all very happy with the simple present. When they inflated up the balloons, the text "Nucleer bombalar disari" becomes bigger and bigger. In the school, 2 girls were speaking about the text. But as they saw a teacher approaching, they stopped talking. It was and still is a controversial topic. The schoolchildren ran towards us and in just few minutes we had no more balloons to distribute.
Hopefully, the heat won't blow up the balloons too quickly ;-). That might give the young children more time to start thinking about the message.

------------------------------------------------------------

Blossoming Buds of hope /

June 4, 2005
From Omar Oueini

Yesterday evening, a group of us were walking in downtown Adana, talking to people and distributing leaflets. A woman, probably on her way from a flower shop, stops and looks at the t-shirts we’re wearing, (Nuclear Bombs Out). She approaches two of the volunteers, Stephanie and Paola.
“We love you guys, we support what you are doing”, and hands to each of them an orange sunflower out the bouquet she’s carrying.
This woman was a prime example of the kind of awareness we were striving to achieve when we started this peace-embassy. Now that the time frame that was originally set is nearing its end, I find myself reflecting on the time I have spent here. Despite all the hardships that we’ve endured, I can’t help but think how I would hate to see this embassy shutdown. We’ve accomplished a lot since we started, but we really just planted the seeds. There’s still a lot to be done in order to nurture the just blossoming buds.

--------------------------------------------------------------
