We're keeping our eyes on you

Well, here we are at the embassy again. We’ve missed a few updates, but we were in Ankara, taking part in a greenpeace action in front of PM “Erdogan’s” office. “We're keeping our eyes on you” was meant to deliver a message to PM Erdogan, who was about to meet with President Bush, that we don’t want more nukes brought to turkey, we want the existing ones (90 Nukes) out of the Incirlik air base and that we are striving for a nuclear free Middle-east.
After a few scuffles and arrests, Ziya, Aslihan, Hilal and Berend were released and Aslihan immediately started talking to the media present at the site, heavily surrounded by police officers and secret service agents. Jonathan and I managed to sneak in behind Aslihan and open up the banner showing our message. Soon after Stephanie “The eye” joined in.

A few days ago we had an action (or demonstration, call it as you want) in Ankara. We started waking up early and making our walk to the park. There we had to wait a few minutes and after the signal was given, we took off. It didn’t take long though before the police dragged 3 of us. A few others were not allowed to enter the street leading to Erdogan’s office. I was a bit afraid for the people who were taken by the police because the police was running and it looked all quite dramatically. Luckily, they were released almost immediately and then Aslihan gave a press conference. There were a lot of cameras and flashes were lighting up everywhere. The people who couldn’t enter saw their chance to support Aslihan and opened the banner behind her. As you can see on the picture, we also wanted to use two ‘head-eyes’ to make our message clear. Unfortunately, we lost one eye (police kept it), but we still had one, which was undamaged, and we could still use that one. People passing by were wondering what was going on and a lot of them had never heard of the topic before. In general, we had amazingly press coverage and Berend was even on BBC-website!

It's 10.30 in the morning, when Philip and I get off the bus in front of the Prime Minister's office in Ankara. We have our t-shirts with the message, Remove the Nuclear Bombs, and huge eye-shaped balloons tied to smaller ones. We walk down the street towards the PM Office and start to cross the road, but we don't manage to get to the front gate: the police sees us and come across the road and order us to stop. We just stand there, holding our balloons with our message and hold our ground. We are here to ask the Prime Minister Erdogan who's in Washington to meet President Bush, to remove the nuclear weapons from Turkey. It's the same message we wish to deliver to all our governments, and the same situation all over Europe: Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Germany. That's why we are here: it's a global problem.
After few seconds, dozens of men come running from the Prime Minister's Office: at first, we don't understand who they are. But as soon as they arrive in front of us, they start taking pictures: they are photographers and operators from the media.
I stand there, and I think about our Embassy in Incirlik, I think about all the patient work that the guys have been doing during the last weeks, getting nearer and nearer to the people every day, explaining, listening, smiling, giving balloons to che children, and simply being there. Now, we are going to spread the message around turkey, Europe, and over the ocean, to Washington D.C.

As I was with Paola I wont repeat what happened so I will just give my thoughts on what I expected to happen, instant arrest, a possible 1-3 year prison sentence or deportation at the very least. After losing our interpreter to a momentary loss of nerve, understandable when your facing a sea of police running towards you. I was amazed to find that the Turkish Police acted with amazing restraint and we where only detained where we stood for a matter of minutes before finally being reunited with our other team members, who had been arrested and released. Message delivered without incident.

I was there standing in front of the prime minister’s office with Ziya and Hilal. There was nobody else to open the banner or come with the eyes. We were separated from the rest of the team. So I stood there for a while until the police realized whom we are. Well they did not notice us until we decided to start to give a statement. Then we have been dragged to the police bus where the only thing I could think of was whether the message came across. Sitting there in the car I was able to hear the police radio. They have been told that the group can do a press conference. I was restless again, I stood up to say, “Hey, you have to release me, I am supposed to give the press conference, you have to let me get out” So they let me out to give the conference.

İşte yeniden elçiliğimizdeyiz. Bir süredir güncelleme yapamıyorduk çünkü Ankara’ya Başbakan Erdoğan’ın ofisinin önünde eylem yapmaya gitmiştik.
Aynı gün Bush ile görüşecek olan Başbakan Erdoğan’a Türkiye’ye daha fazla nükleer silah getirilmemesi, halihazırda bulunanların da (90 bomba) İncirlik’ten çıkarılıp ABD’ye geri gönderilmesi ve sökülmesi için “Gözümüz üzerinizde” mesajını iletmek amacındaydık.
Ziya, Aslıhan, Hilal ve Berend’in kısa bir süre tutuklanmalarına rağmen polis görevlilerinin ve sivil polislerin arasından Aslıhan hemen orada bulunan medya mensuplarına konuşmaya başladı. Jonathan ve ben Aslıhan’ın arkasına geçip mesajımızı gösteren pankartı açtık. Hemen sonra kafasındaki göz ile Stephanie aramıza katıldı.

Birkaç gün once Ankara’da bir eylem (isterseniz bir gösteri de diyebilirsiniz) yaptık. Erkenden kalkıp parka doğru yürüdük. Orada birkaç dakika bekledikten sonra sinyal gönderildi ve harekete geçtik. Polisin üçümüzü durdurması uzun zaman almadı. Diğer birkaçı Erdoğan’ın ofisinin önündeki sokağa bırakılmadı. Polis tarafından alınanlar için çok endişelendim çünkü polisler koşuyordu ve bu sahne biraz dramatikti. Neyse ki, hemen bırakıldılar ve Aslıhan basın açıklamasını yapabildi. Ortada pekçok kamera vardı ve heryerde flaşlar patlıyordu. İçeriye giremeyenler de böylece Aslıhan’ın arkasına geçip pankart açma şansını yeniden kazandılar. Fotografta da gördüğünüz göz-kafalardan aslında iki tane kullanmak istemiştik ancak birini kaybettik (polis el koydu) ama hala sağlam bir tane daha vardı ve bunu kullandık. Oradan geçenler neler olup bittiğini merak ediyorlardı çünkü konudan hala haberdar değillerdi. Genel olarak medyada çok yer bulduk hatta Berend BBC nin bile internet sitesindeydi.

Sabahın saat 10.30’da Philip e ben Ankara’da Başbakanlığın önündeki otobüsten indik. Üzerimizde ‘Nükleer silahlar dışarı’ mesajının geçtiği tişörtlerimiz ve elimizde küçük olanlarla birlikte göz biçimindeki dev balonlarımız var. Sokaktan aşağıya başbakanlığa doğru yürüyoruz ve karşıya geçmeye çalışıyoruz ama kapıya gelemiyoruz. Polis bizi görüyor yolun karşısına geçip bize durmamızı söylüyor. Biz de elimizde balonlarla ve mesajımızla orada duruyor ve yerimizi korumaya çalışıyoruz. Biz burada şu anda Washington’da bulunan ve Bush’la görüşecek olan başbakana nükleer silahları Türkiye’den çıkartmasını söylemek için bulunuyoruz. Bu, Avrupa’da aynı durumda olan Italya’daki, Belçika, Hollanda, İngiltere ve Almanya’daki kendi hükümetlerimize ilettiğimiz mesajın aynısı. Bunun için buradayız: bu küresel bir sorun.
Birkaç dakika sonra bir sürü adam Başbakanlık’tan bize doğru koşarak gelmeye başladı, ilk once kim olduklarını anlayamadık. Ama bizim yanımıza gelir gelmez fotograf çekmeye başladılar: bunlar fotografçılar ve medya çalışanlarıydı. Orada dururken İncirlik’teki elçiliğimizi düşündüm. Arkadaşların haftalardır süren sabırlı çalışmalarını düşündüm. Anlatarak, dinleyerek, gülümseyerek, çocuklara balonlar dağıtarak ve sadece orada bulunarak insanlara hergün biraz daha yaklaşıyorlardı. Şimdi mesajımızı bütün Türkiye’ye, Avrupa’ya hatta okyanusun diğer yanına Washington’a yayacağız.

O sırada Paola’nın yanında olduğum için neler olduğunu tekrarlamayacağım, hemen oracıkta tutuklanma, 1ile 3 yıl arası hapis cezası ya da en kısa zamanda sınır dışı edilmek gibi nelerin olmasını beklediğime dair düşüncelerimi anlatmakla yetineceğim. Bir derya dolusu polisin üzerimize gelmesi üzerine tercümanımızı geçici şok nedeniyle kaybettik. Aklı başında hareket eden polisin tavrı beni etkiledi. Tutuklanan ve salıverilen diğer gruptaki arkadaşlarımızın yanına katılana dek bir sure orada tutulduk. Mesaj kaza olmadan yerine ulaşmıştı.

Tam orada, Başbakakanlığın önünde Ziya ve Hilal ile duruyordum. Grup ikiye ayrılmış ve diğerleri oraya gelmeyi başaramamıştı. Pankart ve gözlerimiz geride kalmıştı. Polis bizim kim olduğumuzu anlayana kadar orada durduk. Aslında biz diğerleri olmasa da açıklamamızı yapmaya karar verinceye kadar da anlamadılar. Sonrasında ise hemen polis otobüsüne götürüldük. Düşünebildiğim tek şey mesajımızı istediğimiz gibi ulaşamadığıydı.
Orada otobüsün içinde otururken polis radyosunu dinleyebildim, basın açıklamasının yapılabileceğinden bahsediyordu. Sabırsızlanmıştım, hemen ayağa kalktım; “Basın Açıklamasını benim yapmam gerekiyor, beni serbest bırakmalısınız”. Sonunda onlar da ikna oldular. Hersey planlandığı gibi gelişmişti, tersine doğru olmasının dışında!…
