The only “truths”...
By Omar
Yesterday, all of us at the peace camp went out for a drink, unwinding after the action in Ankara.
A group of US soldiers on leave had been there for a while. A few exchanges and soon one of the soldiers, Dan, offered to buy a round of tequila shots.
Later on, he came along to visit our peace embassy and asked to add something to the log. Here’s what he had to say:
“As a soldier in the US Air Force, congregating with the International Green Peace Party is a relief. The only “truths” I see, are the “truths” that the US military sees. I met everybody at a bar, 10 June 2005. We spoke of the propaganda the military feeds us and the nuclear program that I was unaware of. Inspired, I decided to stay and talk throughout the night. They explained their purpose was not to protest, but rather to inform.”

This single thing could by itself give meaning to all your initiative there.
It's astonishing though that even the people that have to work in the base are unaware of what's going on there... But I guess it's how military secret goes: without respect for the people.

This is a fantastic way to end the first chapter of the peace campaign. You have not only changed hearts and minds in the community but have also reached those those working at the base.
Yesterday, one national paper had a photo of Bush and Erdogan. Directly underneath it was a picture of your protest. The message couldn't have been clearer.
Well done to all of you - you have launched the campaign and put nuclear weapons back on the agenda.
