Sunshine - a natural GPS
Posted by Pook, GFRS volunteerWhen I wake up in the morning from the light of the sun, it is to the sounds of the Bird of Paradise. They live near my bush house.
Our bush house is very simple but it keeps me dry and safe from the rain every day. It was mostly made from the products of the forest; only the roof is made out of a large sheet of plastic to cover us.
It keeps me feeling warm, even though there are no walls. Only six poles and a ladder up to the sleeping floor, where up to 8 people can fit.
When us volunteers walk in the forest we use the Global Position System (GPS) to know where we are so we don't get lost. But if we lose the signal or the batteries go dead we have a serious problem.
The local people go into the forest to find food, medicine and so on but they don't have a GPS. Do you know how they know their way in the forest? They can track their position from the stand of the sun so they never get lost and always make it home.
