New species found in Papua New Guinea!?
Posted by Anne, GFRS volunteer
This morning I was having my breakfast, a porridge made by our Chinese volunteer, Vien, when this interesting little insect decided to pay a visit to my hand. It wasn't a spider and it wasn't a cricket. It has two back jumping legs and four other legs - all red and white striped - and it could walk sideways, too.
The body of this little fellow has black and green circles, and it has a very interesting mouthpiece. It's very flexible and can fold its legs underneath itself. When I moved my finger to it, he backed away alittle but was still very curious. Grant, one of the Greenpeace campaigners, came to have a look at it. He says I very probably have discovered a new species!
Grant thinks there must be many more undiscovered species in these forests, because there hasn't been any scientists in here so far. It's great that the people of Lake Murray care so much about their forests so these animals will have a place to live in future and won't end up endangered.
