How to make rope out of cane

We have a swimming place here at the camp, which we use for washing. It is also a good place to chill out during the hottest hours of the day. There is a path built of bamboo and small tree trunks that leads there. It was well built about six weeks ago but the water level has risen with heavy rains.

This, combined with the many uses the path has weathered, has weakened the path’s construction. The canoe ropes are coming off making it unsteady. I had a small incident there, with one of the bamboo poles flying up and almost hitting my head in a silent film style when I stepped onto it.

I asked Daiya's help to fix the path. He is one the Catfish clan members working together with us here at the camp. First thing we needed to do was make more cane ropes for tying the bamboo poles and tree branches together. We set off to the forest looking for cane.

About 200 metres from the camp, Daiya spotted a cane vine that was suitable for our purposes. It was about three centimetres thick, coming down from the rising, high up in the canopy. He cut the cane close to the ground and asked me to start pulling it down. There didn't seem to be any end to it and after I had pulled down about 30 meters of it before I was told that was enough. We dragged the cane back to camp and started the process of making rope.

First we made about 5 metre long pieces out of the cane. After that the cane was split into four pieces. The centre was pulled out so that only the cover of the cane remained. Some fine-tuning was done with a knife so that the rope gets thin. This makes it flexible so that you can make simple knots with it. Daiya seemed quite amused with my rope making experiments but complimented my work. After two hours I had made only 15 metres of rope. Seems like I will need some more practise. Tomorrow we will fix the path using my ropes.

Rakkaalle Petterille terveisiä Pietarista!
Olen mielenkiinnolla lukenut sun juttuja sieltä. Hienoa, että osaat nyt tehdä köyttäkin. Mutta ne bambit vois jättää rauhaan.
Paljon haleja Annalta!!!
