On scrubbing, and spreading the word

I’m from Japan, and I’ve joined the Rainbow Warrior to help patrol the Paradise Forest for illegal and destructive logging. I really want to learn as much as I can about what is going on here, so I can tell people back home what is happening.

Japan is one of the largest consumers of products from the Paradise forests. Substantial amounts of China's imports are re-exported to Japan as Bintangor or Meranti-faced plywood or Merbau flooring and furniture. The government of Japan is not doing anything to stop these imports.

I believe most people in Japan don't realise where this wood is coming from; it’s hard to find out where the timber for such products is sourced. If people knew where it was from and understood what happens to the forests here, they wouldn't buy it.

I've been involved in the campaign in Japan. We visited a port in Shikoku and found logs arriving from PNG, to be made into furniture. We attached signs to each of the logs saying 'Illegal timber', and surrounded them with 'Illegal logging' hazard tape. The campaigners spoke to local government and the press.

Some people think this is too big a problem to deal with and/or it is only the concern of governments. But if I, a part-time waitress, can be here and help make a change, it means anyone can make a difference.

Since joining the ship I have been a deckhand. It is really interesting to do all the deckhand jobs. These are things that I've never done in my life before and can't imagine I'd ever have a chance to do if I hadn't joined the Rainbow Warrior.

The job I like most so far is scrubbing the outside of the Warrior from an inflatable. We use tiny hand-held brushes to scrub this huge ship! We also use magnets and rope to pull us close to the ship, because as we’re scrubbing so hard we push ourselves out to sea! After we finish scrubbing, it feels great and it looks great - like a brand new ship.
