Early morning swim
Posted by Karen, who's back in the city and missing the GFRS
There's a sleepy slow sense of the morning. I’m aware others are awake, but lying there absorbing the sounds of the bush, ringing and thrilling around us.
I rise to take a swim and head out down the jetty.
Some of the poles tied together have loosened. One gives and drops down into the water. I wobble. The water is warm. The log slippery. I duck down to balance. The next few logs are more firm; three tied together and I make my way out to the end where a cross pole is tied.
I drop myself down into the water and my feet touch the bottom. The water is chest high. It's warm and smooth.
Once in the water, I notice how still and calm the lake is in the early morning quiet and swim a few strokes, a little anxious about the saltwater crocs that some still fear; some say have gone – hunted out.
I swim as far as I can before hitting the floating mass of green grasses that skirts the lake. Their roots wrap around each other sinking into the green gloom below.
I approach a floating lily, one single flower. Its fragrance citrus-like.
I like this way of waking to the day.
