Dmitri, Second Mate, Russia
My name is Dmitri. I was born on Sakhalin Island in Russia and I now live in St Perterburg and Auckland.
For the last five years I have worked as Second Mate on the Rainbow Warrior. At the end of December, 2004 the Warrior was not too far from Indonesia when the Tsunami occurred so we went to the area and assisted with relief operations. We helped for about one month after which the ship left for Japan.
I decided to stay on and became a volunteer for an international NGO which provided local fishermen with small fishing boats as well as food, medicine, building materials and tools. During my stay, I came across the needs of a particular orphan school, Fajar Hidayah, which opened in Banda Aceh. Together with my friends we founded the Orphans Trust Fund in New Zealand to help the children.
I am very happy to be returning to Indonesia and to help preserve the ancient forests and local communities.
