Sophie, RW volunteer/blogger, UK
I'm Sophie, the blogger onboard the Rainbow Warrior for the Paradise Forests campaign.
I was born in London and now, on those rare occasions when I'm in the UK, I live in Yorkshire . My past is pretty diverse – including being a theatre lighting technician, festival organiser, a web designer and a climate activist/campaigner.
When not busy doing my best to be a thorn in the side of climate criminals, dumpster diving, facilitating meetings or watching 'Firefly', I get myself into all kinds of interesting situations ...
Last year I spent 3 months travelling New Zealand in a crazy house-truck with three other women and a dog, running workshops and direct action training around the dangers of Genetic Engineering. It proved to be good training for living in a small space with lots of other people!
The last couple of months were spent living out in the New Zealand Bush, mainly at an occupation of a proposed open-cast coal mine site in Happy Valley. I'd wake up every night to the sound of Kiwi calling and every morning to make a cup of bush tea from the Manuka trees growing around us.
I've worked with Greenpeace before, but this is my biggest adventure by far. I'm really excited to be on board the Warrior, helping to protect the ancient forests. As well as being some of the last places on earth still absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and slowing climate chaos, its diverse ecosystem is home to people, animals, trees and plants that don't want a part in the world of big companies. I want to help the landowners take back their lands and be left alone to live sustainably.
I've never been to sea before.
Sophie
