Liu Bing, campaigner, Greenpeace China

Liu Bing, campaigner

My name is Liu Bing, and I have worked for Greenpeace China as a campaigner since 2004. Before I came to Greenpeace I majored in Forestry Management at the Beijing Forestry University. This is where many of China’s Forestry officials and experts also studied – so we who were studying how to save trees were on the same campus with those learning how to make the most money for the timber industry.

The Greenpeace forests campaign in China has run a successful campaign against Asia Pulp & Paper, one of the world’s largest paper-making giants from Indonesia. We saved one of China’s last remaining natural forests from being replaced with plantation timber for paper-making.

China is the biggest importer of timber from Papua New Guinea. Most of it comes from illegal logging. I think we have the responsibility to protect the large areas of intact ancient forest remaining here in PNG and South East Asia.

Although I have studied and worked on forest issues for some years, I have never seen a real ancient forest in my life. I feel extremely excited about coming to the Global Forest Rescue Station. I am grateful for the invitation from the Kuni tribe to be able to come and experience their forest.

I hope that by working together like this, we can show the world how to protect their home.
