Hi,
My name is Roger Grace and I am a photographer on the Rainbow Warrior. I am also the oldest person on the ship and some people call me an old Foss. My job is to take photographs of the exciting things we do, like chasing fishing boats and documenting the catch as they haul the fish on to their decks. Any really exciting pictures we can then send out via satellite to the news media of the world.
But I also take photos of more mundane things, like crew photos for the website, and details of names and callsigns on fishing boats so we can check them against an international register and find out if they are pirate fishing boats not authorised to fish in these waters.
I am also a diver and take underwater photographs when I can. I really hope I can get a chance on this trip to photograph schools of tuna underwater! That would be a real highlight for me, and very useful for the campaign.
I am from New Zealand, and started doing contract photography for Greenpeace in 1990. My first assignment was to take photos of animals caught in driftnets in the Tasman Sea, which helped Greenpeace to get a ban put on driftnetting in the Pacific. Since then I have done about 20 expeditions with Greenpeace, including 5 trips to Antarctica and going around the world twice. Working with Greenpeace not only is a great way to travel and see some out-of-the-way places, but it also feels great to be doing something positive to help the environment, especially the oceans, which I have seen rapidly degrading over my lifetime.
