Fred

Deckhand

Solomons

Hi, I'm Fred and I'm from the Solomon Islands. I came to know about Greenpeace from a friend of mine who is also working for Greenpeace (in the Solomon Islands). It is about a month now since I joined the Rainbow Warrior as a volunteer deckhand. Before this, I worked on a container vessel for eighteen months as an engineer apprentice.

I have noticed that life on board a Greenpeace ship is very different to that of the commercial ships. Life is fun, and everybody really helps each other out. Sometimes I feel like it is a holiday tour! Before I came to join the ship I had very little knowledge of what Greenpeace is all about, and its goals and aims. I'm very happy to have this opportunity now to at least join the Rainbow Warrior as a volunteer, which gives me a better chance to learn about a lot of things that Greenpeace is doing. The Solomon Islands is one of the countries in the Pacific that is strongly affected by the fishing and logging industries. And so far as I have noticed, most of my own people back home have very little knowledge of how to use our resources sustainably. They don't realize the negative effects that those industries can have on us.

Now that I'm with Greenpeace I have a chance to learn more, and help voice my peoples' concern. Together we will help make this world a better and a safer place to live!
