The last of the Roaring Forties
Posted by Dave, on the Esperanza
By the time you read this, chances are the Esperanza will have left the Roaring Forties. It's some days since we left the Furious Fifties behind. It's got to be said, those old sailor men weren't mucking around when the coined those names, referring to the Southern lines of latitude. Let's hope the thirties are timid. This is my third time sailing in the Tasman Sea with Greenpeace - both previous trips have been on the Rainbow Warrior - and my current crewmate, Logi. So far, he and I have failed to convince anyone that it was really quite calm on both of our trips - both of which took place in winter!
Right now, I'm getting a touch of déjà vu - there's been a few times on this trip where I've mentioned how I'm sitting at my desk, listening to the wind howl around the bridge, with the ship rolling in the swell. This time, however, instead of rolling, we're pitching. This means that instead of rolling from side to side, the bow and stern of the Esperanza are going up and down - like a see-saw... yee haw!
This crazy motion is because we're head-on into the wind, heading northwest towards Sydney. We're planning to reach Australia before the weekend - and we're all looking forward to it. We've been (by my vague calculation) 39 days at sea now - we left Auckland on January 26th, and everyone is pretty tired, but in decent humour.
But enough moaning about the weather! Here's a little something to read about: Whaler's Myths - and the Reality »
...and have you seen the high jinx on the Webcam Esperanza flickr group?
