Rough weather chatting

Posted by Andrew (from the Amsterdam office):

The Esperanza has a 24/7 internet connection, which (judging from my instant message chat with Dave today) even works in really rough weather. It's a little bizarre and a little cool to by text messaging with someone on their way through some of the most legendarily rough ocean on Earth

Anyway, seems things have gone wobbly, and Dave is having a rough time. The Esperanza is built to take this stuff, and the crew is more than capable of seeing her through it. But things can't be fun on board.

Here's our chat from earlier (IM names have been changed to protect the arguably innocent):

[10:08] Dave: hey andrew
[10:09] Andrew: good morning (more or less)
[10:09] Dave: good evening then!
[10:09] Dave: I'm in the middle of trying to edit a blog for today
[10:09] Dave: but the weather has been f_cking rotten all day
[10:09] Dave: which is making sitting at the computer kinda impossible
[10:09] Andrew: heh heh
[10:10] Dave: so if you or adele have anything else to stick up feel free!
[10:10] Andrew: pretty comfy where Im sitting
[10:10] Dave: gonna post something in a while if i can
[10:10] Andrew: I'll take a look in a while and post something if yours doesnt make it
[10:10] Dave: i'm currently jammed, standing up between the wall and the office table

[10:10] Andrew: let me know if you want me to help in any other way
[10:10] Dave: cool
[10:10] Dave: just keep an eye
[10:11] Dave: thanks
[10:11] Andrew: try tieing yourself to the table with some rope, then get some heavy straps and secure the laptop with them
[10:11] Dave: much appreciated
[10:11] Dave: i'm hoping the weather will settlt down over the next day or so
[10:11] Dave: day ortow rather
[10:12] Dave: ha!
[10:12] Dave: crikey
[10:12] Andrew: best of luck. sounds like fun
[10:12] Dave: that was a big wave....
[10:13] Andrew: know how many degrees of roll/pitch?
[10:13] Dave: not sure what the highest has been
[10:13] Dave: i heard someone mention 30 45 off the vertical
[10:13] Dave: it's more the violence of it
[10:14] Andrew: 45 pitch or roll?
[10:14] Dave: Karli got thrown across her cabin a couple of nights ago
[10:14] Dave: and currently has her arm in a sling
[10:14] Andrew: wow, so a nice whiping action then
[10:14] Dave: cuts, bruises
[10:14] Dave: yeah, exactly
[10:14] Dave: roll
[10:15] Dave: there was water coming off the monkey island earlier
[10:15] Andrew: sounds pretty heavy. cant wait to see to web video story
[10:22] Andrew: anyway, I should let you go. maybe I'll post this chat as a blog. not that Im lazy or anything :) just shows what its like
[10:23] Dave: that's a cool idea!
[10:23] Andrew: yeah go. and remember, dont try to drink any scalding hot coffee
[10:23] Dave: yessir
[10:24] Andrew: best of luck then
[10:26] Dave: ta

So nice that you've edited out that "u".

Looking at the webcam today I was already wondering how many of the crew were seasick. Good luck to Karli and the others :)

I feel guilty, about to head to the beach while you guys are rolling and pitching and flying out of your bunks, tying yourselves to your chairs and flying round the corridors.

take care out there hope the weather gets better soon.

the weirdest whaling season ever, peppered with distress calls and burning ships.

I really hope this is the last time you'll have to come back. The thought of 50 humpback songs being eradicated in the name of so-called "research" next year is horrifying. And to think that if they kill those 50 humpbacks next year, they could be wiping out a whole pod - it could be Tonga's whole pod.

Let's keep this campaign singing so that the humpbacks can keep their song.

Poor Karli. Give her my best. That sounds like something that would hurt...
Actually, best wishes to everyone who got cuts and bruises...
Remember: you're doing this to save the oceans and the whales. Repeat this mantra in your head whenever you hit something, discover a bruise or cut yourself.

I knew the weather must have been bad when I was on the phone to Sara and it cut out every 30 seconds. She said that every time the ship rolled one way the satellite cut out, and when it rolled the other way it connected again. You could hear the ship itself groaning in the background... unless it was Karli being sick!
