It's a sign!
Posted by Sara, on the Esperanza
Goodbyes are always emotional. Sailing out of port, leaving good friends behind and the anticipation of what is ahead always leaves me a little misty eyed and soppy. You expect your friends to wave you off. But, I am always amazed by the number of people that come to wave off a gang of virtual strangers simply because they are on board a Greenpeace ship.
There was the elderly lady that I met for a matter of minutes at an open day a couple of weeks ago, who turned up today all dressed up and blowing kisses. But I was most struck by one person who has already been nicknamed "Sign Man".
For the longest time before we left Auckland, "Sign Man" stood silently at the back of the gathering crowd waiting to wave us off, holding a piece of card in his hands.
As the lines where thrown and we edged out of the harbour he held the sign aloft, high above his head until we were well out of port. The message read "Greenpeace, from the Whales and John, Thank You".
Back at ya John - thank YOU and everyone who came to the dock and have sent messages of support from around the world. (I did warn you I get a little soppy on the first day out!)

Very cool! Also like his t-shirt. What if people started holding up signs at sporting events and anywhere else there are TV cameras?
Could say the same as his t-shirt or some other message.
