Having a wonderful Christmas without Harrods and Wal-Mart

By Christian, onboard the Esperanza

Out here, in the South Pacific, as far away from anything as you can get, there are no shopping malls, mega stores or cute little Christmas shops. Here, in the best Christmas spirit, we taketh what we haveth, and make do. And do well.

It works like this: About a week before Christmas we all pull a piece of paper from a hat. On this paper there is a name, and that is the person you make a Christmas gift to. All of this is very secret and hush hush, so we lock our cabins and sneak around at night (sometimes freaking each other out), putting things together.

The engineers have their workshops, the electricians theirs, the deckhands have access all areas and all kinds of utensils, the mates have computers and charts and everybody has different talents; some are cooks, some bakers, some painters, some poets, all artists. All of Santa's little helpers, and all of Santa's little elves, coulden't ask for better working conditions.

With all the creative people onboard we had no option but to have a weird, wonderful and whacky Christmas celebration.

Gifts included:

A humorous handmade Guidebook for New Zealand (there are three types of kiwi, apparently: the bird, the fruit, and a species of engineer known as a Nolan ), a beautiful candle holder, jigsaw puzzle, a jar of chutney, an island - plasticine is a wonderul thing, a bookmark (original huh?), a little turtle that wiggles its head.
The bosun got a tshirt saying "Numero Uno Bosuno", not to mention the fantastic electrical maze in the shape of the Esperanza, that rivalled everyone's childhood memories of the electronic boardgame "Operation" - you had to pass a ring around the outline without touching the sides, if it touched, a buzzer would go off.

I think homemade presents are so much better because they come from the heart! What a great way to celebrate the holidays! Forget about Wal-Mart & Harrod's (they're EVIL)! In fact, I've been unemployed for a while & to save money, I made most of the presents for Christmas this year!

I would like to wish you all happy holidays (on board & on land)! I admire you all & you inspire me in ways that words cannot express!

Had a chance to supply some computer hardware to Greenpeace when they visited South Africa and also visited both vessels while they were in port a experience that i will never forget. Blessings to all aboard and keep up the good work.
