Behind the scenes: Rose Young
Rose on the Rainbow Warrior
By Adele, at the Greenpeace outpost on a small Swedish island
It’s been a whole year Defending Our Oceans, and while we’re transiting to New Zealand (calm before the storm, I suppose!) we thought it would be nice for you to meet some of our deskbound warriors who comprise the Defending our Oceans: Behind the Scenes team. First cab off the rank is possibly the world’s coolest grandmother (to no less than seven grandchildren), Rose Young.
Rose is the overall project leader (or, as hapless project leaders are more commonly referred to within Greenpeace, “cat herder”) for Defending Our Oceans. Herding cats is obviously never an easy task, and this isn’t called our “most ambitious expedition ever” for nothing.
Rose at sea | The Persuaders.... Rose as onboard trainer |
Rose has worked for Greenpeace for most of her adult life after running away from home in her teenage years. You can usually tell if she’s in the building if you see an exceptionally stylish woman with a phone glued to her ear exclaiming, “I’m LIKING it” punctuated by “Oh my gawd, can someone bring me some cawfee?” in the Boston accent which has survived (flourished, even) after 37 years living in the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland. She's equally at home, it seems, in an orange survival suit on an Greenpeace inflatable, organising phone conferences from the middle of the ocean, having a pint with fishermen or hobnobbing with Prime Ministers, UN delegates, celebrities.
Rose has been at the helm and guided the expedition (sometimes comprising our three ships at once) through an amazing 380-odd days at sea, 2 oil spills, an earthquake, a volcano, a hurricane, a toxic dumping and three humanitarian relief missions, not to mention everything from stolen equipment, missed ships, lost web editors and eleven different Greenpeace offices collaborating with eleven different universities and marine scientists (and no doubt at least 3000 cups of strong coffee).
I for one will certainly be raising a glass of brandy to Rose this Christmas.

This is exciting to be able to know the people who run the ship and the programs (project mgr?). Hats off to you Rose, thanks for the job you did in 2006, Merry Christmas and clear sailing in 2007.

Thanks very much Adele for that special insight, for someone that is obviously very much your friend. That's something that always strikes me, ...how those in Greenpeace always seem to support each other in such Loving earnest. ...and I suppose it's fate, that someone with a name like Rose Young, would turn out to look an exact mirrored image of that, ...a young (and very precious), rose. Congratulations Rose for living a life that only a Loving heart could know.
I want you all there to know, that on this Christmas Eve, as you sail toward that guiding star in your hearts, my thoughts and appreciation of your courage and sacrifices will be with me. Merry Christmas, and God bless you all, ...GC
-Response from Adele: What a lovely sentiment, GC. Merry Christmas!

Why did she run away from home?

Hi Esylt - I asked Rose. She said because she was in love.
:-)
