Sea lion antics

Plan A for today was to dive at Espíritu Santo Seamount, to document some of the diverse life found there. As is often the case, weather dealt a swift blow to plan A this morning. Don't get me wrong, it is sunny and warm, but there is too much wind and current for diving at the seamount.

So, moving right along to Plan B... we headed for our dive site at a sea lion rookery on a small rocky island near Espíritu Santo.

Being land animals, manoeuvring underwater with a banner in a bit of surge isn't the easiest operation for divers, and as you can imagine, it gets harder when there's a sea lion pup chewing at the banner pole. Being marine mammals, the sea lions had no problem at all showing up our underwater clumsiness, swimming circles, flips and loops around us, and nibbling on fins and nudging camera lenses at any opportunity.

In the end, we were able to choreograph the whole thing into order to send a message to the Mexican Government, via underwater banner, calling for "Reservas Marinas Ya!" (marine reserves now), as well as another banner calling on the United Nations, who are meeting now in New York, to protect deep sea life with a moratorium on high seas bottom trawling.

This area is one of the sites proposed in the Greenpeace report as a marine reserve - It is crazy to protect only the island where the sea lions breed, without protecting the surrounding marine environment that they depend upon for food.

Most countries have networks of national parks to protect forest ecosystems, now it's time to add networks of marine reserves to protect marine life.

Some people say that marine animals have no intelligence... This just shows that they do... It is so awsome to see a Sealion in its natural habitat... Doing what sealions do...
