VIVA MEXICO - GREAT NEWS!
Posted by Irene, onboard the Esperanza
Today we clap our flippers: the Mexican Minister of Agriculture finally signed the decree that makes the island of Espíritu Santo and the surrounding area - including the seamount of El Bajo - a Marine Reserve. This marks the end of a process that has been ongoing for the last 2.5 years.A few days ago we dived near the island of Espíritu Santo, in order to send a message to the Mexican government. The area is very rich in biodiversity and hosts many different species, including sea lions and hammerhead sharks.
Today we received the good news: nearly 49 000 hectares are now protected. At least on paper.
In addition to the decree it is of course imperative that legislation is put in place, and last but not least: these laws have to be enforced. Otherwise the marine reserve status will end up being a paper park with no real value.
This small step brings us a little bit closer to our goal: a global network of marine reserves!
