One year of Defending Our Oceans
by Irene, onboard the Esperanza
Today when the Esperanza arrives in Pichilingue we celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Ocean Defenders expedition. We said the expedition was going to last for a year, but it is actually going to last a bit longer. So stay tuned - there is more to come!If the Esperanza could speak, she would perhaps tell you about what she has seen during the last 12 months: whaling, pirate fishing, tuna ranching, pollution, ghost ships, oil spills, marine debris and destructive coastal development. It might sound silly, but sometimes I have to remind myself she is not a living creature.

Woah has it been a year already! I've followed you all year and you have done amazing work! I'm glad that you're campaign isn't finished yet with the whales still under threat and all...
Go GREENPEACE!

Thanks very much Irene, ...and I'm with you Heidi, it doesn't seem possible it's been a year already. I've enjoyed reading your replies and your support throughout this journey.
Many thanks too, to all of you at Greenpeace, both in the field and in administrative capacities. Congratulations for these many achievements that have made a monumental impact on our environment and the way the future of our world will turn. Just so you know, ...in addition to all you have mentioned, thanks for providing these RSS feeds direct from the Esperanza. It has been a major attraction, ...on my website alone averaging more than 6,000 hits a month.
And for all of you patrons out there, perhaps it's time for us all to step up to the plate again to make our annual, or monthly contributions pledges to keep these good ships afloat. After all, we're all 'Warriors of the Rainbow' right? God speed your Love Greenpeace, ...you're the best chance this world has

Thank you very much for your heart-warming comments and support, Heidi and Grateful Child!
We will of course not stop campaigning to save our oceans the day this expedition is over. But I do hope to see the day when we can all just sit back and eat licorice all day (or whatever you fancy doing!), because we are not needed anymore. Not quite there yet, are we!
(So if you read this and have not yet signed up as an Ocean defender, please do!)

You are right Irene.
Nothing will change until attitudes change amongst the new generation of young Chinese in Hong Kong, China and other Chinese communities around the world - which they are, but very slowly.
Certainly amongst the hipper kids in Hong Kong, shark fin soup is definitely seen as 'uncool'. Eyes are starting to roll in Hong Kong when grandma orders it (yet again) at a family gathering in a restaurant....
