Mystery avian hitchhiker

We're not the only ones heading south: early this morning a pod of grey whales turned up on our port side, visible mainly as fountains in the water (couldn't get a good picture unfortunately!). These whales are on their annual long journey to their breeding grounds off Baja California from their northern feeding grounds off Alaska and the Beaufort Sea - a little trip of about 20,000 km.

We are in transit and I spend most of the time behind my laptop preparing for the upcoming Mexico leg of the Ocean defenders expedition. That might sound boring, but as you can see there are always little things going on. It's good to be back on the Esperanza again.
Shortly after the whales sighting a bird started circling around the ship, and it wasn't a seagull. I can tell a chicken from an ostrich, but somewhere around there my knowledge of bird species ends. We decided it was a falcon - feel free to enlighten us if you recognise this particular species. This feathery hitchhiker sat on the bow for quite some time, keeping an eye on our whereabouts.

If you had happened to walk past the Broadway pier in San Diego last night, you would have witnessed a big kiss-and-hug-party. We left some good people behind, amongst them Marie whom I am taking over from. It is always sad to leave the ship and friends with whom you've been sharing so much with. There was a lot of waving and shouting as we left port and the San Diego skyline behind.

Wow - I would love to see grey whales :-)

I feel so bad for them since in addition to the usual threats (global warming, fishing line entanglement etc.) the endangered grey whales face a major threat from the oil industry :-(

Also - read about how IFAW helped to save the grey whales' sanctuarty here.
