Isabel Leal - Media Officer

Isabel

From: Spain

Hi!, I'm Isabel, I'm a journalist and my role on the MY Esperanza is to liaise with the media to tell what Greenpeace is doing and why.

Having the opportunity to be part of a Greenpeace team on a ship and witness the life in the oceans on site instead of through a computer screen is a privilege -the chance to develop your profession with something you feel committed to is a luxury these days.

I chose to be a journalist because I think information has to flow in order to allow changes to be made. With my job, I can contribute to raise awareness on the threats to the oceans but also that might still have the chance to implement concrete solutions for the environment, the communities and wildlife.

Life on board is a daily learning exercise: from survival training to a little familiarity with navigation and cetaceans surveying, to coordinating information with the rest of the world through sometimes fuzzy if at all internet or phone connexions. On top of that, being able to live and work with other people with different cultural backgrounds and skills in a reduced space, which is a good exercise of tolerance.

The best of life on board is team work. We share a tiny campaign room filled up with entangled cables, books, notebooks and dangerous coffee mugs scattered all over. Seven people work here every day, frenzy typing away and taking decisions at a brink, keeping a good sense of humour. The worst? I always miss my family and friends in Madrid, a city I'm deeply attached to and my family and home in the Basque Country, a wonderful place I chose to live at. And not being able to go jogging early in the morning in the fields nearby my house is difficult to bear at sea!
