Irene - onboard webbie

From: Sweden/Finland
I live in Stockholm, Sweden, but was once upon a time born in Finland.
I maintain these weblogs and try to tell you what we are up to. To prevent my eyes from going rectangular I sometimes help out on deck, and I have a new career as the ships hairdresser (Karli and Irene´s salon - massage and haircuts). If you spot crew with funny hair, you know who to blame.
I take onboard smelly beach findings, which probably rules me out as best cabin mate of the year.
6 years ago I started working for Greenpeace, managing the websites and blogs for Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark. Occasionally I get to sail on the ships, but mostly in colder waters like the Barents Sea or the Baltic Sea. This time the mountains at the horizon have no snow on top.
My first few years we lived near the Baltic Sea, where my father and I used to go out fishing in our little rowing boat. Later I learned that the Baltic Sea belongs to the most polluted seas on the planet, and now we are not supposed to eat the fish more than once a month, if at all.
The fact that we can't see the result of destructive practices at sea with our bare eyes makes it so easy. Easy to believe that the sea is an interminable source of food and that it will just keep swallowing whatever trash we throw in it. Now we are really starting to experience the consequences of that attitude.
I have a little viking niece. Ten years from now I would like to be able to look her in the eyes and say that we have done what we can to make the world a better place for her to live in. For me that is a good way to evaluate my choices in life, small or big.
Comments
Don't worry Irene, they are not so smelly... and you are a wonderful cabin mate.
xx

luz elena, would have been nice to meet you and your students. We were anchored quite a bit out from San Felipe, so we couldn't really have an open ship unfortunately. Next time I hope!
Take care

Merci Alain, ça fait très longtemps que je n’ai rien écrit en Français! J’ai laissé le blog à mon amie Helena, et suis retournée à Stockholm (un peu moins chaud que le Mexique…)
