Boy from the desert meets the sea
Posted by Irene, onboard the Esperanza
Mexican journalist Alejandro Paéz left the ship a few days ago. He told me the story about how he as a boy experienced the sea for the first time:I was in a car with my brother and we arrived in Santa Monica, California. Outside the window I saw, for the first time, the sea. It went from one window to the other and it was all I could see. I was an adolescent - 10 years old. My brother asked me something and I could not speak. I couldn't breath. That's the way I knew the sea. I will never forget it. Ever.
I am from the desert, and my life happened amongst scorpions and not fish. For that reason, if I remain looking at the sea for a long time, the water makes me anxious. It is too much for me; I got to know the sea so late.
That day, as we drove away from the beach, I observed the small details in the rear mirror of the car for half an hour.
I had at first been struck by the immensity and couldn't distinguish details like waves, for example, and the way other people were able to give themselves to their caresses, naked under the sun.
I post Alejando’s story instead of the long rant I had prepared on how Iceland stopped the proposed moratorium on bottom trawling in the UN. But you can read all about it here.
