Local feelings

We’re working with local enforcement officers and have some Pacific Islanders onboard as crew and campaigners. I don't know if it's because I'm English, but sometimes it's hard not to feel like a great white hunter cruising through the Pacific telling the natives how to manage their own resources more effectively.

But Greenpeace does have offices in the Pacific, run by local people who have been working on the issues facing the Pacific for years. Greenpeace does get some amazing support from the local community. In 2004 Te Vaka, one of the most successful bands in Polynesia, wrote the song "Our Ocean, Our Future, Our Choice" for Greenpeace. The song is a passionate call from the people of the pacific to their leaders, and to the world's fishing industry, to ensure the Pacific tuna fishery survives large scale commercial fishing and piracy.

Listen to Te Vaka's song >>

This year the song provided inspiration for Fiji's 3 day interpretive dance show, Tadra Kahani. Three of the eight entries choose to create a dance around the theme of defending our oceans. The slideshow below shows the entrants in action.

Earlier this year Fiji hosted the World Music Festival. Artists from around the world joined the festival which aims to develop environmental programs through music. Greenpeace volunteers were also there, talking to people from all over the Pacific who had come to enjoy the music. Take a look at the slideshow below to see what their thoughts on overfishing and piracy are.

What a great way to start the day. If this doesn't get your creative juices flowing, I don't know what will. Thanks so much Richella, ...this is so beautifully put together. I've downloaded the song, and you'll be hearing more from me on this. You know, ...I woke up this morning with the song, Here Comes the Sun, ...and I guess this article is it. Just excellent, ...that's what Greenpeace is all about, ...Love to you all, ...GC
