Wherever the Esperanza goes there is hope in the hearts of men

When I was a little girl I asked my father why they called me Esperanza. And he said that Esperanza means hope, and that when I was born I was the hope of the family. So when I grew up I started using my name for that: I hoped to become a lawyer, to get married to a good and loving husband and to have beautiful children. And then I hoped to help improving the quality of life of all Filipinos.

For the Filipinos the ocean is where they get their livelihood from, fish, shells. Especially the poor need the sea for their living. We are an ocean country, 7200 islands surrounded by the sea. The cooperation of everybody is needed to keep it clean. We should not throw garbage into the sea. We should not take fish that is still small, but instead protect the life in the ocean. There should be protected areas like the marine reserves we have already. I think these reserves can be an example for other countries, they can learn from the Philippines.

It is a good time for the MV Esperanza to arrive here, while we are threatened by this oil slick in Guimaras. The Esperanza brings hope that this oil will be contained and will not spread onto the other islands. You could not have choosen a better name for this ship. Wherever the Esperanza goes there is hope in the hearts of men.
