Our memories of the Philippines

by the crew of the Esperanza

As we have reached Cebu, our final port of the Philippines, it is time to look back. Three very intensive weeks lie behind us, full of events and impressions, some negative, some positive, a lot of them very touching. What will we remember the most of our work in this beautiful country? We have made a little poll.

Pete, Captain: The moment when we saw the oil coming up to the surface on the sea near Guimaras. Oil out of a sunken tanker in more than 600 meters depth, but finally reaching the surface. Ship accidents are preventable. But once something like this has happened there is little you can do, you can only watch the oil appearing on the surface. These disasters must be prevented.

Miguel, Deckhand: I will remember the beauty of Rapu Rapu Island. The colours of the water, the rocks, it was just marvellous. One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

Måns, Engineer: What I found most impressive was the protest march in Legazpi against the Lafayette Mine. I felt I was really doing the right thing, joining the people there. It was such a direct way of taking action. I am sure the march will provoque some reaction of the owners of the mine or the local politicians.

Mary Ann, Deckhand: Being in Apo Island was an extraordinary impression. To see how well preserved the marine reserve is, how people are enthusiastic about it. In general I was very touched by how Greenpeace was embraced everywhere we went.

Janet, Scientist: For me it was very moving to see the polllution of the sea with my own eyes. I work on the issue all the time, but being here on site has given me a lot of new motivation. It has really renewed my enthusiasm for Greenpeace.

Colin, Radio Operator: I will remember the extremes. In Guimaras we saw people swimming in the oil slick trying to bring out a barrier to protect their shore. And then in Apo Island it was a little paradise, a population living in harmony with nature and making quite a good living out of it.

Heike, Web Editor: The most emotional moment was the encounter with the whale shark. To see this creature so much bigger than me, experiencing the life under the surface was really a gift.

Timo, Third Mate: I was deeply impressed by the flotilla in Rapu Rapu Island. The Esperanza surrounded by 70 fisherboats of all sizes, all packed with people, the flags, that was just amazing.

Pep, Chief Mate: The volcano in Legazpi was one of the things I will keep in mind, a very strong impression. You think there is just floor under our feet, but suddenly you see the inside coming out, liquid and orange.

Rania, Assistant Engineer: The bearing witness diving in Dauin and Donsol was very impressing. To see the beauty of the world underwater, the colours of the fish, the corals, the reflection of the sun in the water.

Remon, Fitter: I found it very touching to see the extremes of poverty and richness. In Legazpi the slums were right at the port, houses made only of pieces of wood - and then we saw these beautiful villas on the beach in Dauin.

Gavin, Photographer: I saw my first seasnake after 25 years of diving!

Danny, Diver and Campaigner: Diving in the oil slick was something that I won't forget. To see that the marine ecosystem is threatened and knowing there is so little you can do about it.

The, Deckhand: The reception in Donsol was just incredible. The amount of people that turned up, the choir, the dancing. The population there has been working so hard to establish their marine reserves, and eventually all their efforts came to fruition - that was really great to see.

Bent, Chief Engineer: The flotilla in Rapu Rapu was very touching. I haven't seen something like this so far in my work for Greenpeace.

I think that all the crew of the Espy and the staff of GPSEA have lead the most amazing campaign over the few weeks. I am a very proud oceans defender and greenpeace supporter. From the rubbish in Manila to oil devastation to the beautiful imagines of the marine reserve.

Now all of you in GPSEA can enjoy some non-ship tour life - bet you wont know what to do with yourselves! *hehe*

And to the Espy crew - all the best for the next exciting leg - the Pacific - ENJOY!

Love Joce xx
