Musical welcome in the whale shark paradise
by Heike onboard the Esperanza
After all the marine pollution problems we have witnessed in the past two weeks we are now bound for the solutions. Meeting the people of the Philippines that are trying to make a difference and protect their ocean for future generations. Our first station today was Donsol, an area of whale shark ecotourism that is threatened by the Lafayette mine.Assistant engineer Rania tells more about the welcome ceremony and the amazing food in her blog (see below). What impressed me the most was a boy from the village, 12 years old, who sang for us a traditional song about his beautiful homeland. Listen to Gilbert Lopez from Donsol singing "Dakilang lahi"!

Wow! The 12-year old boy, Gilbert Lopez's voice is a sure-fire hit at an early age, huh! He's just great singer.
I wish the people who have read this story would be glad to hear the voice of a child, despite of the inequities in life and the threatened future of the people of Donsol, Rapu-Rapu Island and nearby areas stand a chance to make their lives in a straightforward direction-away from the devastation brought about by the Lafayette Mine.
In such an early age, we don't want these innocent children to suffer the ill-effects of the mine tailings that continue to wash into the open sea.
We have to protect our seas, the spoils of minings, though it promises us better job opportunities, employment and money but ultimately, if we lost our natural resources along with it, our very lives goes the way to self destruct.
Tell that to [the people of] Lafayette Mine Co.!!! We need to protect what mother nature has left for us, not destroy it.
Always,
