"I only wish that the oil goes away quickly"
by Francisco, schoolboy from Guimaras
I am 12 years old and I live in Citio Lusaran on the island of Guimaras. I am in Grade 6 now, my favourite subjects are mathematics and sports. In my spare time I go swimming and fishing. I learned to fish when I was seven years old. On friday 12 august I was on my way back from school along the beach when I found it all black. I didn't know what it was and thought it was just some mud the sea had brought in and that would go away quickly. But than I heard in the radio it was oil.Now I can't go swimming any more. But that is not the worst thing. The worst is that we cannot catch fish, because they say it is dangerous to eat. The government gave us noodles and dried fish, but I don't like them. I doesn't taste like fresh fish. I only wish and pray that the oil goes away quickly so we can go fishing and swimming again.

I was saddened to hear the oil spill in Guimaras, especially for the children affected. Their family depend almost on the ocean for their food and livelihood. Now what are we going to do? Are we going to give them donations like noodles and sardines that is not fresh. How can we say now that the children are the hope of the nation if their life is devastated by that catastrophe. I hope the offenders who did this should be punish. I also support the law that oil tanker should not travel to the route of marine biodiversity site. Peace and more power to Greenpeace!

i'm really saddened, too, with what happened to Guimaras. it has always been my favorite province, and the last time i went there was just last may 8, and i was so proud of it (because i was with my friends) it is so beautiful, i mean, we don't see something like that in Manila...
and right now, with what happened, i know it would take years for the affected area to be back to normal again.
and i can't help ask... "of all the 7,107 islands in the Philippine archipelago... why Guimaras?..."
