Preparing myself to see something worse

We left port a few minutes ago heading towards Guimaras, the site of what is now considered the worst oil spill in Philippine history. It is my first time to be on the Esperanza and I have joined the Rainbow Warrior and the Arctic Sunrise several times.

A while ago I sat on the port side of the ship watching floating plastics and other garbage on the waters of Manila Bay, I could not help but feel anxious about what awaits us in the waters of Guimaras. It is depressing enough to see synthetic flotsam on the water’s surface as well as taking pictures of corals and other marine life smothered by plastics and other garbage. However, I do not think I am quite prepared to witness an oil spill first hand after seeing several documentaries of other oil spills and pictures of this recent and ongoing disaster.

We spent a lot of time discussing and considering the different factors that led to the decision to bring the Esperanza to Guimaras. More importantly, we had to make sure that Greenpeace would be there to make a difference in the ongoing efforts to minimise the impacts of the spill, if that is possible. As her name means, the Esperanza brings hope to a few families in the form of donated relief goods. The Philippine Coast Guard also requested Greenpeace to help in the visual assessment and documentation of affected areas (over and underwater).

As we discussed the plans to dive in areas affected by the oil spill, images of corals and other marine organisms covered in black sludge flashed into my mind notwithstanding our personal safety if we would dive in the oil slick. I have seen dead and dying corals which are almost totally white during the coral bleaching event in 1998 that brought tears to my eyes while I was diving conducting the assessment. Now I have to prepare myself to see something worse.

M/Y ESPERANZA has arrived in Iloilo, Philippines

Thank you for your kind concern with us. We all share the same sentiment and the rage of the Oil Spill incident last August 11, 2006, Friday-it was already 8 days now and yet, nothing is new but the creeping black death on the Guimaras Strait threatening more areas in Guimaras.

There had been a report that a pack of Bunker Fuel was moving towards the direction of San Lorenzo-Buenavista boundaries..if not because of the retreating tide, it may have forced its way to the fishpens along the rich fishing grounds of Buenavista.

See you when we get there..Godspeed and good luck to all of us and I am very sure that GREENPEACE and all its team of scientists and experts including the relentless cleaning-up operations of our fellow volunteers will surely make a big difference.

God bless!

Yours,

Hi Danny!

What you are doing is great. And it is very important those pictures be made and can be shown, for people to understand the impact of such a disaster. I love the pictures you have taken that I saw on the web.

Have a safe journey!! Hope to see you again sometime!

God, like the Philippines doesn't have enough problems. The government should be held liable for this, but probably wouldn't be able to afford a thorough clean up. My heart breaks for the coastal communities affected by the spill and the marine ecosystem they depend on for survival. Down with these evil, evil oil companies. They overcharge us, they suppress alternative energy programs and think nothing of sh***ing where we live. Thank you Greenpeace for continuing to fight to make a difference.

I am so affected by this. What can people overseas do to help?

To all the crew's of M/V ESPERANZA & to all volunteers:

Thank you so much for the help you rendered in the oil spill in Guimaras. My heart bleeds when I saw it personally. All the living organisms which was hit by the oil spill were struggling to survive.I'm worried now that my hometown in Northern part of Iloilo are threatened also.Estancia has beautiful unspoiled beaches & coral reefs.I used to dive there when I was a young a child.I'm praying that the Visayan Sea will not be affected. It's time to call now the international community & to all Filipinos living abroad to send their donations.
It's time to give our share to the environment.

It has been a busy two days since we arrived in iloilo and guimaras as you all
probably know. thanks for the message of support and solidarity. i guess we
all have to do what we could for now but one important thing that we should do
from hereon is not to forget what happened. we are having discussions these
past few days that those responsible might get away if media interest dies down.
let us all keep up the fight to defend our oceans!
