"As artists we get our inspiration from nature"
by Heike onboard the Esperanza
I promised to reveal today what is going to happen with the garbage we collected in Manila bay: Five Manilan artists are going to create ART out of it! Of course it will take some time. But one of them, painter and installator Ed Manaloh can already give us a glimpse of what he is planning with the garbage from Manila bay - and how art can help to protect the environment!Ed, how would you describe your own art?
I do installations that are especially specific to the site: I take the materials that are there, so there is an interaction between the art and the location. And recycled material is something that is relatively easy to get.
You belong to a groop called "Artists for the environment". How did you get the idea to found this association?
It's a loose groop that was founded already in the nineties. As artists we get a lot of inspiration from the nature and its beauty. That's why we felt the urge to protect it. Now even very famous Philippine artists belong to the group, like the author Nick Joaquin or the composer Lucio San Pedro.
How can art help to protect the environment?
As artists we have a broader view on what is happening in the community - and at the same time we are part of it. We can bring this broader view to other people, as our contribution to the community.
Do you already have an idea what you will do with the garbage from Manila bay?
I have only started of course. But there will be a fish and a bird.

I congratulate these artists for turning something ugly into something beautiful. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it's true.
Art when inspired by mother Nature is the most powerful one and touches people's heart in the core of it.
Best wishes
