Open Boat - Day 2

Wow! What a day. Today has been great. Nice sunny day, maybe a tad too warm for my liking but nice all the same. It was Open Boat again and we've had loads of people turn up. We've had lots of school children, the Indian Coast Guard, and the general public. I don't think I've ever met this many people in my life, most of whom I can't recall their names. It's a brain overload.

I think the best thing about these open days, apart from the fact that the public get to come on board, but how the crew really get involved. Our Mates, Captain Frank, all the Deckhands etc are involved. They are taking tours, helping answer any questions. Even some of the Engineers are available on the deck for people to ask questions about the engines and stuff. When you work on a Greenpeace ship, you don’t just sign up to be a deckhand, or just a Mate, you become a tour guide for the public, you help load stores, you clean, you paint you do just about everything. You really have to be versatile for this job.

Just as we finished our open day, our Supplies arrived. Luckily we had a few extra people around from Greenpeace India to help us load them on. After that, we were treated to some fantastic Indian cuisine. Our local Greenpeace office invited the crew to join them for a meal in a nice little restaurant close by. So we did, and had some awesome food. The bit I enjoyed most was when the taxi driver was taking us to the restaurant. It was a really little old Van and it was raining quite a lot and he had one hand on the wheel and the other out the window moving his front windscreen wiper by hand. We all had a little chuckle to ourselves then he turns and says "automatic!" then laughs too.

Check out the Video update of the Esperanza arriving in Chennai Port, India!

Oh, and don't forget to check the webcam out too. Whilst we're here you can see what going on onboard!!
