Cruising Past Sri Lanka.

The last few days have been getting back into work again. After having a nice break from the everyday onboard stuff, and getting ashore to learn and research about rising sea levels in the Maldives, it’s back to the painting. Chipping and Painting has resumed as the weather has really improved. Our Boson, Grant and the deckhands have been keeping up with the everyday maintenance that has to be done onboard.

Up on the Bridge the Mates are looking out for small fisher boats. Little wooden Sri Lankan fishing boats don’t appear on the radar screen often, so it’s a tough job to make sure we don’t run them over. It's not an easy job dodging small boats, especially considering we are 72 metres of steel, it can take a few seconds for us to get out of the way, she doesn't turn on a dime. It’s also a like a minefield trying to dodge them and their fishing nets. We passed a few this morning, they came quite close to us, so I decided to give a bit of a wave, but they just stared at me... Do I look that strange? Ok, don’t answer that. Maybe next time I’ll get Mathijs to do his happy dance on the bow, which ought to attract some attention!

Today we have got our first glimpse of Sir Lanka. We are currently following the coast line around the eastern side of Sri Lanka heading North up to India. We aren’t able to pass through the waters between Sri Lanka and India as it’s too shallow. It’s about 4 metres at one point and I know if we got bogged in the sand, I sure as heck wouldn’t be getting out to push. To give you an idea, our ship has a draught (hull bit that’s under the water) of 4.7 metres.

As we sail through the calm oceans off the coast of Sri Lanka, our good friends and colleagues onboard the Rainbow Warrior are getting ready to depart Athens. Hibsy, our onboard Webbie for the Warrior has some great stories to tell and some awesome pictures on the MedLog. Check Em’ Out!
