Another Morning On The Bridge
by Slade, onboard the Esperanza
Well, it's 4am and Im sat here on the bridge typing a little weblog for you all. It's very dark. In fact, the only light here is the glow from my laptop screen and the dimmed lighting on the radar screen and various other navigational equipment on the bridge console. I look out the window and all I can see if pure darkness. So dark that I cant even see the horizon. It's just one big bit of black, and if you stare into it for a minute or so it makes you feel blind because there is literally nothing to see. With Diek's Dutch ambient tunes playing softly in the background from his mp3 player, the sound of crickets doing their chirp to attract the female, and the motions of the ship, it's all very relaxing.Last night was nice, we had a perfect sunset with bright oranges, pinks blues and everything in between. The sky was filled with stars. Looking up at it kinda made me feel like when you're a kid and your parents stick glow-in-the-dark stars and planets on your bedroom ceiling so it feels like you are going to sleep outside. We also saw a whale yesterday while it came to the surface to breathe as it spayed water from its blowhole.
I hope from reading these experiences you can get an idea of what we are trying to accomplish. I know it's hard to sit at home and feel and see what we do, but I hope this gives you a good idea. Its very much worth protecting our oceans, and just because it all may look fine from above the surface, its below the surface we have to care for the most.

Slade, the best watch is from 4-8 am. You can see the sky lighten up with spectaular colors and make you feel good to be alive and lucky to be doing what we are doing. Made me forget about what we are fighting for, as if nothing was amiss...if only for awhile :-)

Thanks, Slade, for that snapshot. Made me wish you were here. And I was there. ;-)
