A Much Needed Break .. A Lazy Sunday!
by Slade, onboard the Esperanza
After working long hours all week, with watches throughout the day and night and some very extreme heat, it is finally Sunday. As we work 6 days a week onboard, Sunday is usually the day off. We still have our watch keepers working and the guys on the bridge, but for most people its a relaxing day. It was a good opportunity to catch up on some much needed sleep and washing. I even decided to shave after 10 days of not doing so. Most people took the time to relax and read, lay in the sun or sleep. During the afternoon I took the opportunity to learn about navigation.Mathijs, our 2nd Mate, gave me a lesson in reading the GPS and pinpointing our exact location on the maps. I can now say I know all about Longitude, Latitude, Degrees, Minutes and Seconds. I also know how to read the radar screens properly and I actually know what those brightly coloured dots are.
Despite a lazy day, Dorothee was busy being our garbologist - hmm maybe that's why she always smells. No No, just kidding! She sorts all the rubbish into the correct recycle bins. Plastics, cans, paper/cardboard, general waste, etc. Then when we come into port, all of our rubbish is recycled. Nothing is ever thrown overboard, and all waste, including sewage is properly treated and taken care off.
Were extremely careful not to let a single thing go over the side into the ocean. The amount of plastic I have seen floating by is terrible. Even floating empty beer bottles - wouldn't be so bad if they were full :P. This is why we carry The Yellow Thing with us so we can take various samples of whats in the water. You would be amazed what we find. So maybe something to keep in mind when your disposing of garbage next time :)
