Yikes It's Hot!
by Slade, onboard the Esperanza
Today was hot, yesterday was hot, tomorrow will be hot .. did I mention it was hot? At about 42 degrees and 80% humidity, its darn hot! I get excited when I go from outside to inside the ship, as its only 30 degrees in the mess (the place we eat) it's much cooler! I think I'm consuming between 4 - 5 litres a day of water and sweating about that much out. I think the most enjoyable part of this heat is when I wake up in the middle of the night swimming in my own sweat. Nice! Have I mentioned it's hot? As the ship is all metal, once she heats up, there's no cooling her down. It's like a floating oven, even with the Air-Con on. Last night Charles, our brilliant chef organized some ice-cream for the crew. I've never seen 24 people more excited in my life. It was like he was handing out gold bars.
I was on watch from 4am - 8am. I was on the Stern (the back) of the ship. At about 5:30am I radioed the Bridge and asked for 1 large pizza, 1 bottle of diet cola and a garlic bread, and home delivered. After being laughed at, within about 10 minutes Dorothee bought me a toasted cheese sandwich. Yum!
After 6am I was on the Bridge with our 3rd Mate, Diek. We we're talking about pirates, to pass the time. He asked me what I would do if they boarded. I replied and said that I would shake their hand, offer them a cigarette and a cold beer and see if we can pick up some football on the satellite. We both laughed and he replied with "Bloody Aussies". What else are we going to do at that time of the morning? Humor keeps us going.

So what would you do if pirates boarded the ship? Would you use violence? Well, you must use violence, seeing as the pirates would probably try to kill you.

Hi Ahmed,
Thanks again for all your help and giving your time whilst we were in Egypt. It was very handy, and also very nice to have an Egyptian onboard whilst we were in port. Was also very good of you to help us with sourcing the small 'odds and ends' of supplies we needed.
I've read your comment out to the crew and they all say a big hello and thanks for all your wonderful work you did for us. It's very much appreciated. We all hope to see you again soon. Keep in touch!
Thanks Again!
Cheers,
Slade

Hi Kieron,
Thanks for your post and for the good question. Keep in mind first off that we are un-armed. Many ships carry guns for this reason. We do not.
However, we do have procedures to resist boarding non-violently. I won't give away any details in case the pirates read all our weblogs (and of course they do, silly to think otherwise).
But the simple answer is: All of our activities are non-violent. This is a fundamental and inviolable principle of Greenpeace.
I hope this answers your question Kieron.
Thanks again for the posting!
Cheers,
Slade

Let's hope you won't even come into the situation of having to apply these non-violent procedures.
