Updates from here, there and there
by Elaine, onboard the Esperanza
There really is no sign of Tuna out here, the fishermen desperate, their catch pathetic. We can't stop them fishing for tuna if there isn't any left to catch. It's sad but gives us an insight into the real state of bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean.Meanwhile, things are certainly hotting up in St Kitts in the Caribbean, that world renowned centre of the whaling industry where this years International Whaling Commision (IWC) is meeting. The Arctic Sunrise has been denied access to St Kitts with no official reason given.
This meeting is a potential turning point for the IWC and could see the reversing of many years of whale conservation. There will be updates from the kids in St Kitts on this blog so you can keep up with the all the political action and the stories from behind the suits.
Sticking with politics, we have our delegates attending the UNICPOLOS (United Nations Open-ended informal consultative process on oceans and the law of the sea - quite a mouthful huh?) meeting in New York right now. We are standing up for the future of deep-sea ecosystems under threat by bottom trawling and we've got video!
We've interviewed an Icelandic trawler captain who is speaking out about the damage caused to the marine environment by this destructive trawling technique, along with some amazing footage of the bottom trawling nets in action. Watch Ocean Defenders TV

Looks like Japan is desperate to control IWC by keeping Greenpeace and other NGO's away from meeting.
I think we should launch a huge action directed at a tourism boycott of the Caribbean Island nations that support Japan and whaling.

Echo - I agree with you.
... Can we cyberact on St. Kitts right now and ask them to let the ship in?
