Fever pitch - onboard animation
by Elaine, onboard the Esperanza
Yay - it's the 8th of June - that's World Ocean Day. Yes and only one day to go before the football world cup kicks off (oh I'm so excited - take that in whatever tone of voice you prefer). To celebrate both events we've put together a little stop frame animation that combines the joy of football and the horror of deep-sea bottom trawling. Geez, sounds great doesn't it?No-one wins with deep-sea bottom trawling! Send this to a friend as an e-card
We came up with the idea for the animation a week before arriving at the ship, which was just enough time to buy a Subbuteo set on ebay and a streaker from the UK (sadly ending up on the cutting room floor - his performance was a bit of a let down).
Hand painting the sets to represent the teams was in itself a challenge - they're only wee and of course the UK team would wear their home colours when playing Brazil because of contrasting colours. And don't even go there with who should be playing (down to the individual team members). Late night playdo modelling made for our final shot - can you guess who he is yet?
Then there was the trawl net - we wanted to make it as authentic as possible, which is why you need the help of a fisherman's daughter. Natasha (her father fished with lines rather than nets but still...) came to the rescue and helped construct a disturbingly realistic bottom trawling net including the cod-end (the bit that ties off the end and is released when the net is brought in).
Then we demanded the use of the mess as our studio - the crew passing through with concerned looks and sometimes a little football advice. Gavin, the star, took over a thousand photo's. Maarten planned the footy moves (down to which side of the pitch Beckham would kick from when he got fouled...) and I moved a lot of little people and big nets around the dinner table. Sunday afternoon disappeared in a blur of football and trawl nets.
Gavin glued it all together before we added the crowd sounds, some authentic bottom trawling noises and Maarten's fabulous non language specific, turkey like commentary. We made 10 versions for different languages and then, finally, it was done.
We had the mobile webcam on us for several hours. The lovely people from the table football shop saw us in action and has offered the ship a subbuteo stadium for onboard entertainment! I'm looking forward to reading future weblogs about the Esperanza subbuteo champions league...
I know deep-sea trawling is really bad (here's something you can do about it) but football remains a mystery to me.

That is terribble - it makes me mad.
Can we do anything about it?
Is it too late?
That was NEVER a foul !
:-)
Original and nicely done!

Re: Is Tuna Ranching Illegal?
Well, the answer is no. Tuna ranching is a legal activity if it meets certain requirements, at this stage mainly that tuna farms have to communicate their production to a regulatory body, in this case ICCAT (some national laws also apply, in general not different to other regulations that apply to general aquaculture).
This is clearly not enough and does not prevent the fact that thousands of tons of bluefin tuna are caught every year without being reported to fill these farms.
Many industrial activities that are clearly unsustainable and destroy the environment are as a matter of fact legal, but that doesn't change the fact that we do have the responsibility to oppose them, or push for them to be strictly regulated when needed.
In the post "Why is tuna ranching so bad?" we give some reasons that explain why this activity is clearly unsustainable, particularly at the scale it's practised today.

You are all brilliant genius and you remind me that it is possible; we can bring about change in a creative way. Well done team.

nice work team, although of course it will be Australia in the final (I know that you told us not to go there but hey....). Good message, well presented. Hope that you can get it out there far and wide.

Hi, so what was wrong with my comment yesterday?? I was been supportive with abit of humor and i'm really curious why it's been rejected - there's no point wasting time if you have some kind of rule i'm breaking.
Same goes with my other comment on the fluffy toys ..

Hi PN - sorry, you're comment got stuck in the junk filter - i had to sort through a thousand comments about viagra and ringtones (i don't think either are going to make a difference to the deep-sea destruction do you?) to find yours...
I think the junk mail filter might not like your name! I'll go and fiddle with the settings - thank you for your comments :)
you saw the replay - of course it was a foul ;)

Elaine, this really shows a lot of creativity. The video with the animations shows what it needs to show.

Gosh, the mystery player sure looks like David Beckham. Even in playdoh, that chin is hard to mistake. But... but it can't be. Where Beckham's left arm is visible fending off the giant net one ought to be able to see the beginning of his tattoo which spells out "Victoria" in sanskrit.
Well, actually, it says Vihctoria, because he">http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/1044797.stm">he misspelt it.
So Elaine, if it's supposed to be Old Benditlike, I'm afraid you'll have to reshoot...
