Bon Voyage
by Alex, onboard the Esperanza
The Esperanza is off to India. And I'm off the Esperanza.
I'm leaving you in the big, capable hands of Slade. Yet another Aussie, but I think we've managed to keep the international vibe. Strewth mate, I've had a bonza time.
Today we went on a snorkelling trip as a little farewell to Hurghada. It was incredible. We swam over coral reefs, teeming with fish of all sizes and colours. It's fascinating to see how they all interact. There are the outgoing life forms that swim around, come to check you out and then if you look closely under coral shelves and in the dark corners there are plenty of surprises.
Now when I look at the exclusive private beach not far from the Esperanza, I can picture the beautiful coral reef that was destroyed to make way for it. I wonder if the guests realise they're standing on a coral graveyard. This marine life needs to be respected and protected. We're heading out of the Red Sea, but we're not going to stop fighting unsustainable coastal development.
Meanwhile, there's been plenty of action on the Rainbow Warrior. Our activists have been threatened by pirates in the Mediterranean while attempting to stop illegal driftnet fishing.
Well, it's been an absolutely incredible two weeks. I've followed fishing vessels around the Mediterranean and discovered the crisis state of bluefin tuna populations. I've seen beauty and destruction of the marine life in the Red Sea. Seeing it all in front of you really brings home the enormity and urgency of the problem - we need to protect marine ecosystems before it's too late.
It also made me immensely proud of the work that we do as Greenpeace - crew, cyberactivists, we all play a part. I'm off to hassle all my friends to sign up as Ocean Defenders. I hope you'll do the same.

Hey Alex. You certainly inspired me to sign up as an Ocean Defender. Thanks - well done. I've loved reading your blogs, & will miss your great missives, though I'll still keep following the voyage & mission of the Esperanza. Promise....& I'll try & recruit some more Ocean Defenders as well.
...Hope to see you in person some time soon.
